discussion Staining wood

I have a load of lollipop sticks that i was going to use for the planking you often found under aircraft in make-shift airfields like in Russia etc. Obviously the lollipop sticks are very light coloured and would need staining. Does anyone have any techniques for doing this?

Having been a decorator bees wax could work , using a small tin/tub of light teak or any other colour you want just rub it on with a cloth and build up the colour until your happy , when dry it leaves a matt finnish but it is water proof so any further weathering could be an issue , or you could use the Vallejo wood grain stuff I`ve not used it myself but it looks very effective if done right , theirs many different methods you can try .

You could try Lifecolor's wood weathering set.

Just remember that wood that has been left outside for a while will turn to a light grey silvery colour as a reaction to the sunlight. Timber used outdoors for long periods of time very rarely looks brown unless it has been treated to make it look so or has been well covered.

This is what I used on my Trawler Deck and the trawl doors, you can make it as clean or as rotten as you want depending on which finish your after.

p.s. the lifecolor mentioned by Rick is probably very good also. I used their products to rust up the hull and the winch in the photo.
