Hello all. Does anyone know of any varnishes that can be directly airbrushed without being diluted?

Thanks for the reply. I have been using vallejo straight to airbrush and noticed that the matt varnish goes on fine, but the gloss blocks my airbrush straight away. I thinned it but it looses quality. It just got me thinking that maybe this wasn't the right thing to do.

I've found that the Model-air paints tend to get a touch thicker after a few months so I sometimes need to thin them. Have you tried thinning the varnish with alcohol? It works for me

No I haven't tried that, but I will. I have been thinning the gloss with vallejo thinner, but the results aren't great, so thanks for the tip

Klear deffinately, but also because it is self leveling it brushes on very well too.

I've had exactly the same problems with the Vallejo Modelair Gloss Varnish. You just have to persist and carefully keep wiping the needle tip. Some people use screen wash to thin acrylic paints I've never tried this. What I have found is that if you squirt a bit of Vallejo airbrush cleaner through your airbrush before you put the gloss varnish in that sometimes helps. Good luck. Here's a cowling that I glossed varnished the other day. You will find that it never comes up to a full gloss but that's just how Vallejo works.

Hi pointblank apologies I do not know your Christian name.

I have not used Vallejo Gloss Varnish. But found difficulties when I am using a .2 needle as opposed to a .4 with Air Model paints. Not had one problem with model air using a .4 needle nozzle.

Read somewhere that someone used Vallejo Brush Cleaner & this seems to be better than their thinners. It worked better for me.

Must also try Vaughan's squirting thro before before starting to airbrush. I also after airbrushing a sequence give a good squirt on a plastic bottle to clear the airbrush which helps.

If you try it try it on an old model etc first. I would hate for you to mess up your model.

Hello all and thanks for all the replys.

I will try the airbrush cleaner idea as I have a large bottle of the stuff. I am using a .3 needle and it dries up after about 10 secs using gloss, but is fine with matt.

I like the idea of this Klear product that everyone seems to go on about. I like the fact that you can buy a litre of the stuff for next to nothing (better option than 1.80 for a tiny bottle of vallejo varnish). I will look for it next time I'm forced to go shopping.

I'll see how I get on with the brush cleaner first. I have heard of the screen wash tip for watering down before but again, never tried it. Seems to be another sensible idea though, with money being a little tight at the mo.

Yeah, mine is too. Very odd, but seems to work ok with model colour.

Rob & Andy. Have you got the correct thinner for Vallejo Model Air. The number on my thinners is 061. It also says that it is for Model Air.

Perhaps you have Vallejo Model Thinner. My thinner is so thin if you put a drop on your finger & touch it it spreads over the finger rapidly. Would say it is much thinner than Klear.

Hi Lauire Thanks for your post your right the thinners that I've got is not the Modelair version it's the Model colour one. So that would explain why it's thicker than the Modelair paint it's self. Will have to order some as my local shop only sells the Model colour version which they put in the Modelair rack.

May give a clue Andy. The liquid is the colour of very thin milk.
