What's the difference between Tamiya XF86 matt clear and the Tamiya spray TS-80 matt clear?

When I paint my models with XF86 it never quite gets rid of the shine!

But when I use the rattle can TS-80 it does get rid of the shine.

So what am I doing wrong with the XF86 or is it simply that TS-80 is just better?

Cant help..... Apart from clear red and orange i avoid tamiya paint like the plague! Never got on with them

Are these matt varnish?

Yes, both matt varnish, so effectively the last coat once the models finished, to dull back any paint/gloss varnish shine.

I've not used XF86 but for matt clears in general it's essential to give them a very good stir as the matting agents settle out to the bottom.

Also, what are you thinning it with? Slow thinners (like Mr leveling thinner) or too much thinner can keep the paint film wetter for longer, which can allow the matting agent to sink, reducing their effect.

Application can have a similar effect, the thicker you put it on the more the matting agents can sink.

Using a spray can tends to sort some of these things for you as they are thinned with the most effective thinner in the most effective ratio. Doing it yourself through an airbrush can take a bit of experimenting to get it exactly how you like it.
