discussion thinning collour with clearcoat?

I have read somewhere that you can "thin" a collour paint by using clearcoat to make a very "watered down" collour if you need to do something like motling.

By using the clearcoat you don't thin the paint beyond the point where it starts to break down, but still get the same thin effect.

Anyone ever used this tecnique with sucsess ?
