discussion Tinted canopy

I'm currently assembling an Italeri 1/48 US F-22 Raptor and I'm attempting to add a golden tint to the canopy (just like the original one).

Any tips for doing that?

Howdy Nosferatu31,

OK, this is not as hard to do as it seems, there wont be any "paint" involved in this method, although there is a specialty product you will need to get.

It is called "Rub and Buff" gold tinted wax. You can find it in craft supply stores or i will give you a link to suppliers at the end of this post. here is the description of the product:

"Made from imported carnauba waxes, fine metallic powders, and select pigments, Rub 'n Buff gives almost any surface a new look in minutes. This unique blend gives objects decorated with Rub 'n Buff a finish that no paint can duplicate. It can be applied to any clean, dry surface as well as over previously painted surfaces. One 1/2 oz. tube covers up to 20 square feet. "

I have used this product before and on clear surfaces, it can be applied in a manner that will tint, but not make "opaque". Just wipe it on and wipe it off until you achieve the tint you want.

In this particular use, i would suggest using it on the "Inside" of the canopy glass.

try putting some food colouring in some Johnsons Klear.

I've seen a website where this has been done successfully (that website may have been linked from this forum).

i would add a bit of tamiya smoke and a bit of gold to clear/future and paint it onto your canopy.

just build up the layers or add more colour as you see fit!

Hi I use Tamiya smoke with a hint of gold thinned for airbrushing and misted on so it goes on evenly and without runs. Being acrylic any problems it will wash off with soap and water. Hope this helps

Just curious... Could you vacu-form your own in a yellow tinted transparent plastic?

dont see why not, but it wouldnt really have the right effect as its i kind of metallicy gold hue to a normal tint.
