discussion Updating a tired old R/C launch

I am looking to update an old r/c launch that I have managed to buy and turn it into an RAF rescue launch or something similar. I have looked at the shapes of different models and would like some professional advice as to whether it seems feasible.

Hi Sinkorswim,

That is certainly a nice looking model there and there is no reason why you should not be able to convert it to an RAF type rescue launch. There are plenty of different ones out there to choose from. Even it if means building a new superstructure on top to replace the existing one, this is certainly not a difficult job to do.

Have a look at some of the plans on My Hobby Store and enter RAF launch or RAF rescue launch in the search box - you should come up with several possibles.

Hi I'm Chris from New Zealand and the types of boats you are talking about have a lot of history so bulding a replica would make more sense. One of my customers was a Coxindruring the war on one of these such boats picking up downed pilots, but I was unable to get the name of his posting before he passed away.

We also have one of those boat in Auckland now rebuilt and named CAROMA privatly owned and used as a charter boat it was apparently one of the fleet of boats being rebuilt (restored) in England of which the Queen's Mother was a patron. Contacting the historical Society might help with plans and detail of somthing with real history.

Hi Chris, My Dad was mechanic and rear gunner (the 2 jobs went together) on the rescue launches picking up downed airmen, and other tasks. Would you have a contact address for the 'Caroma' please, as I have been researching these boats with a view to modelling both boats my Dad served on.

I used to frequent some ten years ago the Panmure Yacht Club Auckland on a thursday evening as race hand on one of the yachts, after the club race we would retire to the clubroom over looking the public wharf where this boat had been tied up for the afternoon, an anouncment came across that 65 people were required to go to the whalf and go aboard this boat(Caroma) to do a subility test (all aboard and when told walk from one side to the other) each of the patipants were given a free drink at the bar, Plenty of takers. That was the first time I saw the boat, I seem to remember there was an artical in the local newspaper about the boat being an ex RAF recue boat and a refference to the Queens's mothers affilliation to the society in England. Thats abpout all I can tell you at this time.

thank you for your help. I just have to plan the superstructure. the prop is rusted solid and I want to change the old electric motor for a marine petrol / diesel.
