discussion vallejo airbrush paints

I've just ordered a new airbrush, never having muck luck with them in the past I thought I would try a gravity one see if it's any better than the one I have, Vallejo do a range of airbrush paints, has anyone used them? is it worth getting them or just use a bit of thinners?

The only difference between the air and the normal is that the air is pre thinned, as far as I have been able to ascertain. I suppose the main advantage of the air is that all you have to do is pour some into the cup of your airbrush and away you go. You could achieve the same with the normal and thinners but could you get it consistent? I suppose there will be times when you would like the paint thicker or thinner but given that you have had issues in the past with airbrushing, I would do what I intend to do, when I get my airbrush, and go for the air. At least that will be one thing less to worry about until I get more experienced.

However, I suppose that the air is roughly a 50/50 mix so I guess that it would be cheaper to mix your own in the long run. If you want to try your existing paint then try to get the 50/50 mix as a starting point and try to keep it consistent.

I am sure now I have typed that, some experienced airbrusher will come along and shoot me down. I do hope so if I am wrong as I am getting closer to needing this info to lol.

Hi there John

I usually use Tamiya acrylics for the airbrush but recently for my Tamiya Wespe, my local shop didn't have German grey but did in their Vallejo range. I bought just the one to see and i can say the Vallejo Air range is fantastic. No thinning required and with it's useful applicator you can add drops straight into the airbrush. I know when my Tamiya stuff has run out, i'll switch to Vallejo. However, i feel that Tamiya acrylics would last a bit longer in that you'd have to stock up a lot less frequently.

I think I will try both, I've used Vallejo for a long time, always liked them, but I will also give Tamiya a try with it, I'm sure a bit of trial and (lots of) error will find the right one

I've used the odd Vallejo Modelair paint and found them very good straight out the bottle.

Hi john i must admit i've only used the vallejo paint once and did not like it much as it clogged my airbrush but that could be because i did not use the air stuff, however iam a big tamiya paint fan myself and have found that a 50% mix of paint and thinner does the job. However everyone seems to have their favorites and i guess it is down to trial and error until you find what you like, i hope this is helpful.
