Hi guys

With today being the anniversary of VE Day I was just wondering if it is celebrated/commemorated in any of the areas where you live.


We do not actually commemorate VE Day but (not surprisingly) tomorrow is a special day for us in the Channel islands - our Liberation Day, the anniversary of our liberation on 9th May1945.

It is probably our biggest celebration of the year, it is a Public Holiday, the main seafront in St Peter Port is closed off from traffic for the whole day. The morning is very much a commemoration with a formal parade, of a mixture of regular army (last year the Gurkas attended) Chelsea Pensioners, local Cadets and other forces such s a fire. Police etc. I think it is being led by the band of the Royal Armoured Corps. The parade is reviewd by the Lieutenant Governor, His Excellency Vice Admiral Sir Ian Corder KBE CB, follwed by a church service of remembrance.

The afternoon os more of a celebration with music, military vehicle parades etc. Link here


Unfortunately I will be missing most of the afternoon and evening since the ferry to get me to Euro leaves at 5.30.

Here in the Netherlands, 4 May is Remembrance of the Dead and 5 is Liberation Day, due to German forces in this country having surrendered on 5 May 1945, a few days early so to speak. VE Day doesn’t get celebrated, and in fact is hardly known at all except to those with the historical interest to know or care. VJ Day is another remembrance day, but mainly for people of Dutch-Indies descent; it passes a lot of other people by completely, unlike the other two.

It’s ashame you ask someone here in the United States whats May 8th they have no clue and don’t care this young generation better wake up soon. When I was young they would hang flags out and when you got a New Flag there was a paper in there to tell you how and when to fly the flag

My flag is up 24/7/365. It is under light at night and is clearly visible from the Highway. Lee, you are correct about the young folks of today. They have no clue about much of our history. It just isn't taught in school anymore. Of course if they have smart phones...who needs brains? Cheers, Rick H.

Unfortunately Rick If we were to fly the flag like you do from our homes some liberal minded prat would object !

Guys - it's a sad reflection of school systems that these dates are not so well known and remembered. We are fortunate that the Occupation and Liberation day are enshrined into the schools curriculum, especially at Junior schools.

I didn't hear or see any events to mark VE Day here in the Midlands.
