Hello, Dave!
I`m sorry, but in which countries does the Remembrance Day celebrate?

I`m from Russia and as you might know Russians celebrate 9 May as a Victory Day

We don`t have this holiday like you.
Dosvidanya lubusheshka,

Welcome to the forum.

As dave said, the rememberance service originally proposed a day to remember those who fought and lost their lives in the poppy fields, hence the use of the poppy. As the second world war came and went, those who lost their lives too were remembered. As of now, we use the rememberance day as a day to remember all those gone who gave their lives for the freedom of today.

All of you in Russia are included in this rememberance, for the multitude of soviet soldiers who stood hard at stalingrad, and those who gave their lives to stop the eastward march of Hitler.

I thoight dobrivercher was goodbye? Damn! No wonder all them russian chicks smiled and walked by!

I would love to talk politics but it is, like most forums, not allowed here.

Rules or no rules this specific piece, in my view, is not the appropriate to air views.

With all due respect Laurie, the whole thread is about people's views!

To Lubusheskha,
Hi and welcome to the forum. In the United Kingdom we commemorate those who gave their lives for our freedom during the first and second world wars and other conflicts since 1945. We also give thanks to those that are still serving and to those who have survived the atrocities that war generates.

It's not really a holiday for us, our government don't see why we should have an extra day holiday to remember our heroes and heroinnes, we show our respects by giving just two minutes of our time in silence at 11 in the morning on the 11th day of November, it's not much to ask, just two minutes, but some people (a lot of people) in this country can't even manage to stop for two seconds. God help us!
Thank you,Dave! You took apart about this Day!It`s better than Wiki :D

I agree , certainly we're not children, and politics can always be discussed in an intelligent and coherent manner..............unless of course there's a liberal involved

Hi all, just over two hours ago in silence in my local town centre I stood adjacent to one of several plastic poppies that I presume the local British Legion had thoughtfully cable tied to a sign post. In my reflection of just two minutes silence for all those brave souls, I couldn't help but notice that I and my wonderfully supportive wife were the only two people amongst at least a hundred people that were stood in silence, even those wearing poppies with so called pride couldn't even be bothered. As I'm writing this I am witnessing my local news that are pouring out utter trash about how the whole region stopped and stood in silence, just goes to show how much crud the media feed us and how much lack of respect todays population both young and old have.

A lot of people raise comments such as 'oh the war was a long time ago, it should be forgotten about'.........it's bloody not..............what about the guys and girls that sacrificed their future for our freedom in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, The Falklands, Vietnam, Korea the list goes on and so too should the rememrance.

Earlier today I attended a family funeral for my nieces baby son that died at just 20 minutes old. I shall remember today not only for my nieces departed son and the people that have passed before today but also for how dismayed and to a point angered at the sheer lack of respect shown by so many to so many.

Not really a political point of view here but I just wish that of all the laws (which no one seems to uphold or police.....i.e mobile phone use whilst driving) that our rudderless drifting government put in place, I wish they would legislate to make it mandatory to observe the two minutes silence.

Nuff said :) :( :mad::mad::confused:

I completely understand your disappointment and anger but you must also understand human nature, not unlike many herd animals long periods of safety and contentment lead to apathy, dulled senses of survival and ignorance in general. Even when confronted with hard cold facts the heads start burrowing in the sand. The vices that the Good Lord put within mans reach in his infinite wisdom have proved too much to resist and so soon enough we shall come full circle again. So have a couple-o-pints kiss the Missus and make the best of it. Such primordial forces are far too powerful to be countered by the feeble attempts of mortal men:oops:....................Cheers!............Jim:)

Thanks for your kind indulgence, most consider me a fuse best not lit but I assure you I am a lovable curmudgeon. Too much life experience and study of war and history have left me cold when it comes to much of mankind and it is indeed sad. But you know what they say "ignorance is bliss" no wonder most Hollywood celebs seem so happy:D

This is a poem I wrote that was included in a Remembrance Book.

PAINTING THE TARN RED

Dishevelled and grimy a tramp of the fields

Cursing gasps as torn, muddy hands grope

Orange glimmer silhouettes abode in ruins

Starlight erupts and drifts lazily in blackness

Tranquil in form awaiting the blanket of night

Now unchained to move, scurrying like a rat

Nearly there…hope in a weary heart

A few more steps to shattered village life

Nearly there…a smile on cracked lips

Eyes catch Sweet Lavender, spikes reaching high

Nearly there...nearly home

He heard no sound as projectile whistled his way

Its merry tune of death finding its mark

Nearly there...so nearly there

Faltering and swooning in Grim reaper's embrace

A flashback to times sat with friends long gone

Where summer Fairy Moss danced with Dragonfly hunter

As life now spills and flows into inky pool of memories

He is saluted by the Water Soldiers who guard this place

To all who have fallen, we salute you in silent remembrance.

Sorry to hear Dave the people of Paignton chose not to respect the two minutes silence but I suspect yours was not the only town being disrespectful in this now crazy world we live in.

But it has to be said us modelling people are a respectful bunch as on Sunday as always at the Telford show the two minute silence was observed by everyone and you could have heard a pin drop. As always it sent a shiver down my spine and I was covered in goose bumps and I had a tears in my eyes it's a shame that others are not as compassionate about the brave people who died or were injured in all the wars so we could live free and happy lives.

God Bless Them All We Will Remember Them
