In any case, when I look at the bottom drawing, it has me wondering if the camouflage would have been that neat IRL. Which is to say, I can’t really imagine the ground crew doing as neat a job painting the plane out in some snowy field in Russia at −10°, as they would at a proper airfield back in Germany before the war. Freehand spraying seems more likely than masking everything up to get those neat, hard edges.

If their distemper was anything like the one I've used, I doubt if it would spray well. Probably just chucked it on from a bucket and spread it out with whatever was available - paintbrushes, brooms, rags.

Hands!!! That’s we used when we deployed to Norway in a rush!!! Loverly stuff, washed off with a good scrub.

Speckles on! The airframe stencils still need doing though. I used the kit decals, they took a while to lift from the paper. The swastika came from a generic sheet of varying styles for different aircraft.

White camouflage applied over AV chipping solution and maskol covered decals. I tried free hand for the upper/lower demarcation lines - let’s see how that works out later.

Decals revealed and a pin wash applied for the panel lines. Tonight I did a bit of work on the exhaust staining using weathering powders. Trying to find reference photos of how this style of exhaust deposited staining was difficult so I just went with what looked right. Not forgetting the landing gear doors.
I think this might still need a wash of very thinned white to mute the starkness of the decals and visible under coat.

How do you get the wheels on without damaging the painted tyres?


If only a wheel change was this easy in real life! Gently squeeze the shock struts at the top to open out the axle end.
Easy when you’re a landing gear expert (ahem!).
