Hi Andy! Fabulous work, the more you put into it more nervous I grow, of it's upcoming maiden-flight.

I've quick question for you; Have you, in your research, found any evidence that paint-chipping was common on these steam-condensers? If so how did it look?

Thanks Trey, as it happens i am a plumber to, i am what they call multi skilled in the trade, being qualified in every trade , Guess thats why my ability to create flows freely. Thanks Daniel. I haven't seen anything as yet that looks chipped. Be sure to stay tuned and all will be revealed at the weathering stage. I tend only to do my home work on the parts that i want to build at the time. If there is evidence of chipping you will see it in this thread.

Back again for another installment.

We are now moving onto an exciting little project within itself. The making and mounting of the Lewis Gun and running rails/gear.

First of all a look at what it should look like on a layout drawing.

I started with the top wing mounts by shaping some square balsa stock and then adding a hard wood top for screwing into and lining with litho plate and adding a few rivets to finish them off.

The next part was to construct the main running rail that fits to these mounts. Using several thickness of balsa stock i came up with the exact width i wanted by laminating them together. Then i added a hard wood ply skin for strength and a styrene strip along the top so that i could get a good flat surface with a rounded edge.

Then i cut some brass strip and made the brackets that hold the cable pulley. I still have to make the wheel as yet. Rivets added along the bottom add the realism.

with this part almost complete i decided to move onto making the Lewis Gun so that i can find the exact location for the forward mounting brackets needed to secure the front of the gun to the rail.

You will see from this picture that though it is a 1/4 scale Lewis gun it doesn't look exactly like the one that is mounted on the plane. The Guns on the SE5a had some sort of shroud that enclosed both the barrel and the air chamber of the gun. This need to be duplicated for the correct effect and for the mounting mechanism required to fit it to the aft part of the running rail. This is a modification that i will make from some sort of material and add it to the gun.

For now you will see the construction of this gun but both the barrel nor the air chamber will be glued into place, this is so that i can slide them into the tube and then glue them on place.

This is the process of Assembly for the gun and will conclude shortly.

The picture shown on the box doesn't look anything like real/scale and is not the effect i will be looking for... i intend to make quite a paint job on this one, more so than the Vickers Gun as this will be in prime view when the project is finished. Lets hope i can do it justice.

Continuing with the Lewis Gun i decided that the Mag for the gun looked a Little naff... therefore something had to be done about it. The final result looks a lot better i think. I had the template drawn up on CAD and then scaled it to size and cut out with a scalpel. Here you will see what i mean a before and after sort of thing.

Next i made the rail that the gun runs up and down on. This was made out of Evergreen Styrene, a few laminated bits and a hole cutter.

Next was a coat of paint in the mount.

And finally for this session a few coats of paint on the gun and some weathering.

The gun is still far from complete, ill show you this next time. All mounted and cables added.

Thanks Trey. I used a great Humbrol color a sort of metal black that you can polish to get a great effect. The mag will look better once ive polished it a little.
