Choice of the primer for a white metal model car painting

On most white metal car building tutorials I noticed the use of solvent based primers.

Does this mean that a water based primer should not be appropriate for this surface ?

I would like metal car building experienced forum members to give me their opinions on this subject.

    I thank you in advance

When priming metal you need something that will 'etch' into the surface, and water based primer just won't cut the mustard, whereas a solvent based primer is purposely designed to do just that.

I'm partial to Alclad primer. Airbrushes nice, levels off to a smooth finish and is good to sand to perfection.
