To answer the question that Polux posed, my view is a strong ' No ' - I don't think military modelling is a reflection of our souls.

There is an undeniable majesty & beauty about tanks, ships & aircraft for all that they're machines designed to kill.

But having said that, it's not the weapons of war or even the men and women who use them that cause death. It's the leaders & politicians who do that, for reasons of greed or vanity.

Let's also not forget that as abhorrent as war is, it also represents humankinds greatest leaps forward - would we have jet aviation, satellite communication or computers in everything were it not for the advances made in extreme need during WWII?

To a greater or lesser extent, depending on the individual, building models or dioramas is an artistic as much as a technical endeavour. To that extent it is something that comes from within. Imaginative rather than literal dioramas, like the ones at the top of the thread have a larger artistic element, but no two are the same.

I'm afraid I'm more of a technician than an artist I do very much admire artistry when I see it, someone already mentioned Paul P's figure sculpting which is a fine example. There are plenty of others represented here too.

      Cheers

My ears were burning , years ago i used to teach art classess to kids and the one thing that struck me with kids as opposed to adults is that kids will never say i cant paint or draw, mainly because thay are not critical of their own work, give them crayons or paints and whatever they do is magic. Then we grow up and we become more concious of our own failings, oh to be a kid again. As far as im concerned everyone can paint, build models be it tanks or planes or ships or figures, its only our self doubt that stops us becoming better. I dont think that because we build these things of war that it is a reflection of our soul, but it is a reflection of our artistry and imagination. When i think of building a figure i want it to represent that figure from the past so i name them, so the greek was Aries, the Roman Vespasian and the Viking Ragnar, so they become something from history. Everybody here has a talent and its art whichever way you look at it, ENJOY it

I build them because I enjoy it. I enjoy the technical side of it like Steve, from research through the building stages to the final product. An emotional and artistic aspect may be there but they are more motivators than a soul search.
