    Inlaws...*tut*.

My Father-in-law said to my wife, when she called to see them. "What's the point in Simon (me) making models if he doesn't sell them?" "Just a waste of money."

Anybody else had any remarks like this from family, friends, work colleagues?

There are many people that, when I explain I'm a modeller, think (you can see on the eyes) you are a child... O_o

I have no problem.....I'm glad to be a child :P

I was once asked 'What's The Point'

I didn't bother trying to explain.

One of my female colleagues referred to models as toys! I just walked away and left her.........lying there!

It's true, they think are toys....but is a gift to build them.....

Why, they don't understand this ?

I get asked why I don't sell them. Odd. First and most obviously, that's not why I build them and secondly I don't want to sell them even if anyone would be daft enough to buy them! Someone did once ask to buy a model from me...so I gave it to him

Asking someone why they indulge in any hobby or pastime is a bit silly. It's something people do for themselves because THEY enjoy it. I don't understand why one of my friends likes to sit in a tent by some windy reservoir over the weekend trying to catch carp, but he has a great time doing it and that's the point.

              Cheers

              Steve

I met a friend of my son on a visit to him in London.

Steve, who is young 65, at least young compared to me. He is an artist. What do you do with your time Laurie he asked.

Make model aircraft I says. Oh he replied very quietly obviously not very impressed.

So there I was with my Ipad which I rapidly put to work. Hey presto up popped my 1/48 Swordfish. Wow he said as he studied it this is very artistic and spent 5 minutes studying the detail and making comments.

That just proves that it is just most peoples innocence being quite unaware of the authentic reproduction of scale aircraft, military machines and ships and boats. Do not think you can blame people as very few have seen what can be done with bits of plastic as we do day by day.

If the attitude is "it is a waste of time" I would take a bet that most of those sit on their bum all their free waking hours watching rubbish programmes on TV (this includes armchair footballers hours watching the inevitable demise of England). Now what do they get for that. They are tossing away hour upon hour in pursuit of nothing. I am not prepared to toss my life away I want to fill it with "doing" which is an infinite enjoyment.

                  Laurie

I got asked why I build them and spend so much on kits, I pointed out that the amount they spend on cigs and booze is treble what I spend and I have something to show for my efforts!

So what? It's MY money and I'll do EXACTLY the same as you do with yours - spend it on what I want!

My missus once said that to me "what is the point of all those ships what a waste of money" then I sold the Waverley for £850 (didn't tell her it cost more than that) we bought a 52" 3d tv with the money now she wants me to sell everything. Apparently modeling is not such a waste of time. I really should finish the Mississippi sternwheeler think of the models I could buy (she would be happy with a bag or a pair of shoes).

Nice one fellas, I answered the same. Nice to see I am not the only one questioned regarding our hobby.

Simple answer is: Because I like to, good or crap I enjoy it and so do you lot.
