Follow rules or not to follow rules that is the question ?

Do you follow all that you have found satisfactory from the past ?

Or do you, as I do, always search for another way ?

    That is conventional or unconventional.

When I came into model making 4 years or so ago I disregarded all of the conventions which were thrust at me. Some as they seemed daft others because I though I could find a better way.

Some were not "daft" others I found were. Some I found it was much better to follow as I could not find a better way.

But I am always looking for a better way and will try as I think of them. At times somewhat frustrating as they do not work and I have wasted, if wasted it is, time. But at times I am rewarded by mixing a tried and trusted way with one of my own.

My problem is that I am never satisfied to follow convention always searching.

Always found that if you have a problem in life never panic (I do for a very very limited time) I always search immediately for a solution they are always there. You get one and panic is limited and dissipated. But then adapt and search for a better and then a better. Never take the first on offer as the final solution. Working in architecture I have found this works every time and very satisfying as it gives great confidence.

Following convention works most of the time but no one method would ever develop or give birth to new ideas and cionventions unless someone somewhere took the challenge to find a better or alternative way. That goes for almost anything in life I reckon.

See, I broke convention and came up with a new way of spelling it. Worked for me but it may not work for others :P

And there I was Joe thinking it was just an NZ way of confusing those in the Northern Hemisphere.

My philosophy don't worry be happy and a problem shared is a problem halved and whatever it is you worry about today will be forgotten next week and in the main I follow convention as you will find these are normally tried and tested methods and if there is a quicker way to do something someone else would have discovered it by now after all it's 2014. So please don't stress or panic just chill love n peace John 60s child

See 'rules' as guidelines. They have usually developed for sound reasons. There is almost invariably more than one way of skinning a cat, but knowing the alternative methods only comes with experience. The rules or guidelines are useful to each person as he or she gains that experience.

I said in another thread that I treat instructions as someone else's opinion of how a model should be constructed, which is fine because I've built one or two aircraft models. If I was starting my first one I would follow the instructions.

            Cheers

Yes that is my way of thinking Steve as I always say "guidelines are the rule" to family members. I usually look at instructions after the event. If I look at instructions before the event I have been "tainted" with how to do it. I just love to find my own way of doing things. It is a competition. The Dishwasher expert of the household gets very annoyed at all this and cannot understand why I have to not only not followed instructions but not even read them.

This can all lead in some circumstances to seemingly disaster but then if the mind is agile disaster is turned to recovery.

John I wish I could have some of your philosophy but with mine that is not acceptable. Not by any means a criticism very much just an observation on how people thinking differently.

Rules are made to be bent if not broken...

As for instructions. Yes I follow them, sort of. Not always in the recommended order though. And yes, I have come unstuck ('scuse the pun) on more that one occasion.

It would seem that in some regards, conventions are made for a reason.
