    The education system

A while back I was in a shop and bought a couple of items one cost £1.20 the other 63p, the young girl had to use a calculator to add it up

That brings my to today, My wife, son and I were out and about and decided to go 10 pin bowling but I had no change for parking, we were in Matalans so I bought some socks so I could get some change, the socks cost £3 I gave to girl behind the counter £5 and asked her if she could give me 50p and 5 10p's as part of my change, I think that confused her because her till didn't work it out for her, so she got out 4x50p's and 10x10p's and gave them to me, I thought bargain the socks have only cost me £2 then she said and would you like some 20p's? I thought :goodnews: it must be a special promotion so I said why not

It's really a sad state of affairs when the kids of today can not even do simple maths, they are far too reliant on computers to do everything for them

    :soapbox:

I think its the age we live in "the computer age".

In 20 years we wont be using paper.....My son Tyler(8) can type like lightning (Online gaming, Homework etc), I cannot. At his age my handwriting was good, his is attrociuos (but i am giving him extra lessons).

His math is outstanding (simple adding, subtraction, division in his head)

I would imagine that the majority of kids can do the same.

I think it was just misfortune you encountered a day of morons.

I think kids today are trained with the future in mind, the futire is all computers for writing, reading and math. And probably everything else for that matter.

The last time i ventured shopping was to the model shop trying to keep them alive, god knows why...i get ripped off everytime i go), otherwise all my shopping is done online, as is my banking. In the last 10 years the amount of post through my letterbox has dropped by 95% mostly due to online everything.

I can see a future where there are no shops at all.....Just humongous Tesco warehouses delivering the necessary to the comfort of your own home.

I have made sure that i have taught all my kids basic maths !! thetrouble is that i neglected basic english. I have got to say im appaled at the level of teaching nowdays my lot can type text speak add up make things and generally do lots of things that a dad can be proud of!! The problem is that they cant write two eligable sentences. Ellie being the exception. The one thing i left to the school to do and result is zero!!!!! Now im trying to teach comprehension and gramma (which to be honest is not my best subject) to my kids who think that its an outmoded form of communication!! What next a new form of esperanto or jamaican speak????

I have severe numercy and grammatical dyslexia (see cant even spell that, lol) so i really can empahise with people who have to use computers to work stuff out!

I can touch type around 200wpm but my hand writing is terrible, i was actually told in school to use a pc as my writing was that bad! After all you cant write backwards letters on a keyboard!

The problem is that today there is too much reliance on the way we use computers and calculators, once these fail people become useless,we should always teach the old fashioned skills to back up the technology that we use everyday, otherwise we become lost beings if they fail.

You can liken it to someone flying around the world using a GPS system,if that fails then how many pilots will know about astro navigation and be able to survive ? as for the prostitution of the English language well words fail me ! once again the mass communication by the use of computers is partly to blame, people no longer take a pride in these things finding it preferable to muddle through.

In the future we will have two basic types of human being, firstly the ones with high intellect who design and build everything we use,and the other half merely the users and assemblers assistants.
