As I get older I have found that poetry has entered my life and made a very significant part.
This is the poem that Leo Marks provided for Violette Szabo. She was a special agent for the SOE during WW11 . Violette was put into France as an agent. Leo Marks was in charge of codes and coding for which he did a remarkable job. Silks and Cyanide is the title of his book and to read it is a revelation and an easy read plus he has a very ripe sense of humour.
In part of this he recounts how he managed , eventually, to convince the Masters of SOE that the Dutch agent ring had been not only compromised but was being run by the Nazis.
So this is the poem which was used by Violette to construct her messages back to the SOE in code.Each agent had a poem provided by Leo Marks to enable security coding.
Leo Marks actually composed the poem in a heart broken state when his finance was killed in WW11. His heart must have been torn when he chose it for Violette. She was also murdered by the Nazis. He knew what happened to her as he watched the messages coming in from all the agents. So sad. It is for me just a most beautiful piece. He must have shed a bucket of tears when writing of his loss.
I hope you like and appreciate such a simple yet so meaningful work. Even in the depths of war a variety of artistic things made their way through all the destruction.
