Aldi (airfix) bargains

Thanks for the heads up John , I dont suppose you can remember all the kits they had? If anyones thinking about the tomahawk I'd definitely recommend it ,its a lovely build. cheers tony

hi Tony in my local Aldi the kits were the tomahawk hurricane spitfire mustang and a Cromwell tank all 1/72 starter kits

A couple of years ago I spotted a 125 Kg electric hoist, next to a high pressure air pump complete with reservoir. Recently, an arc welding outfit. Our local Aldi is packed with customers while the nearby Tesco has no queues at the checkout. Try a medium-sized free-range Aldi chicken, £4.99. Just bung it in the oven. Delicious! But avoid their self-assembly products like a through-feed hose reel (mine needed three major modifications to get it to stay assembled) or an electric cable in a closed reel (it tends to jam when being reeled in.) My good lady wife claims that after a trollyfull* she has saved about £25 each time compared to Sainsbury's. Given the huge permanent lowering of prices nearly everywhere during the last couple of years (not just in food), like 30-50%, I'm tempted to think that retailers were either very inefficient or making huge profits, or both.

* I mean literally!

That is the good side Steve ie cheap food.

I worry that this will be the thin end of the wedge. Supermarket selling off models putting the dedicated model dealer out in the cold. For instance B & Q have been a killer in the building world of competition as they sell either there own brand or just one outside brand. It just takes away from the companies their main stay but who also provide the unusual and out of the way products plus the service to get things.

Just another hole in the seaboat for those traders in each town providing model supplies.

Nothing to be done about it but it is to the model makers detriment in the future.

Shouldn't worry to much Laurie I think Aldi are a very competitive company and they sell anything they can get their hands on in high volume and cheaply. Which is great for people like ourselves as their purchasing power is passed onto the little people like you and I who occasionally are lucky enough to come across a bargain instead of paying through the nose for everything throughout the year.I think this will be a one off sale and they have no intention of taking over the modelling world so I say grab them while you can as when they are gone they will be gone.

On the flip side to your point Laurie is that there is every possibility that little Billy out shopping with mummy will buy one of these cheap kits and will be the hook that gets a new generation of youngsters involved in the hobby. After all haven't we seen Airfix kits and the like sold in Woolworths and the corner newsagents in years gone by?

Yep Rick but then he could have seen plenty of models to choose from in the local Model Shop. We have two in Jersey and have taken grandsons to choose the model they want. One of the shops they can stand out side and gaze in the window. There are always kids in there and the other shop on the ouside of town. A toy shop with departments for a number of things. One being a very nice array of models with all the tools and paints.

But you cannot change it all it will change itself. As Graham D said in another article "LSA models was my local model shop, now there are no model shops in the Brighton and Hove area"
