Free painting lessons

Hi folks, now I have been having a lot of trouble with my figure painting most especially flesh tones, So you might be surprised to hear that I had my first free lesson on how to do flesh tones from the nice staff in the Games workshop in Liverpool. All that was required was to approach the staff tell them in which areas you need help and then book a lesson day and time, I have to say it has been most helpful and useful to say the least and has given me much more confidence, so anyone need help in any aspect of painting drop into your local branch and help will be offered in the way of free..... that's right you heard correct...FREE painting lessons.

Hi Laurie is there not a games workshop on jersey, they normally have shops all over.

For figure painting, you can not go wrong with the Games Workshop guides. That is what they specialise in!! Have a look for the Golden Daemon awards - truely spectacular stuff!!

So How much did you spend in the shop....

I guess they do them free as they see it as a way of securing a returning customer - A very good idea and one many other places could learn from.

The games workshop guides are a good starting point but they can be too basic and a bit cartoony in style. Although some of the golden daemon winners are spectacular.

For figure painting, AwesomePaintJobs has some good videos as a starting point. There also some good how to's on From the Warp, although he has not updated for some time.

Ian I am in the process of completing a figure, bearing in mind that this is only lesson 1. Once completed I will post it up for all to see and comment on.

Yup, I've seen our local one in action, and they are uncannily generous with their time. Obviously it will lead to sales, but I'm convinced that the guys there are not just driven by filthy lucre! Be interested in how you get on with flesh, tricky Johnny as I recall. I seem to remember green being (at the time) inexplicably added, tiny quantities, true, but it made all the difference.

Hi John, the nice fellow has been teaching me how to paint convincing flesh tones without the need to be mixing lots of shade and highlight colours, so I have only been using 4 pots of paint... non of them actually mixed with anything other than water, painting flesh tones has always been a bit of a black art to me so far.

Ah, so you're doing it old-school - building it up with thin glazes? I must admit, when I went into the Games Workshop here at home, I was amazed at the quality of painting going on there, there is clearly a LOT of common ground here, despite the genres being quite different. War gaming is not my cup of tea, but for my money, anything that gets kids working with their hands has my vote!
