    Anti virus software

Ok, I'm maybe being a bit tight here, but what free antivirus software do you recommend ? I've used avira for quite a while, but recently, it is forever popping up to try and flog me something. Time for a change.

Quite a few people who know more about it than me reckon Windows Defender is more than adequate.
I use Malwarebytes Pro, only because it came free with my online banking account. They stopped that offer, but got it for 80% off for two years when they discontinued it.
BT Broadband offer Norton with some of their packages, worth checking if your ISP have anything going.

AVG Free. I wouldn't touch Norton.

            fourth'd,
Norton is garbage, clogs up your system with way too many files, actually slows your system down and then takes forever to properly delete them when you decide to change..

when I used free ones my go to was always AVG Free, nowadays I pay for Kaspersky premium...(only due to getting an 80% deal on it), but it protects my laptop perfectly.

Indeed Pete, I've been there before.
It looks like AVG is the winner.

Windows ( Microsoft ) Defender is no less capable than any of the others when it comes to newly released virus/malware.
AVG was terrible ( haven't used in over 9 years ) , avast is not much better , Norton is one of the worst fro slowing down and false positive warnings.
