Have a look at the top right hand corner of the opening screen. You should see three options for Notifications, Messages and a link to your own stuff.

Click on messages and away you go.

If you don't see the options, I'm sorry but I can't help.

click on the persons name
click on private message
write the message
Click on send

Chris as Paul said if you look at your avatar on the left hand side you will see the name is in blue not black. As Paul said click on that and you will get the message option.
