Reference choice/preference ?

when a get a kit I actually want to build I go through a lot of reference options to do either something slightly different or to check that what is in the instructions is correct for a real model ( something that really existed ) I will look at model reviews, history either in books or online or watch documentaries or films if the film has an acurate representation of the piece in question


So I thought I'd find out if any of you good people do similar things

Interesting question


I take into account the following, in no particular order.


Pre Purchase


- What do the reviews say


- Has someone on this forum already built it and what issues did they have?


- Is there much reference mataerial in places like Youtube?


Post Purchase


- Do I already own the colours? If there are 2 variants, one requiring 2 new pot of paint and another requiring 17 then Ill probably sway towards the first.


- Do I like it? There is no point doing a variant that you think is ugly......or is there?


- Is it within my skill level? No point creating a model you cant build if there is an easier variant. For example, I hate glass. If there is a version that has a metal nose and a variant that has a glass nose, Ill probably sway towards the metal nose.


That being said, you also have to take into account the reason why you bought the kit in the first place.

Always. I usually have a subject in mind and will buy the kit from which I can best make it. I will buy after market parts, up to a point, to help me realise my project.

Well to be honest, it depends on the build I am doing.


I see modelling as a hobby and a therapy, it clears my head, calms me down and I have lots of fun doing it.


So that being said:


For the hobby, I would go with a lot of research


For my Market Garden Dio i did a lot of research because it is a Historical moment and it needs to be correct.


For the therapeutic side of it.


A normal build of figurines or vehicles I build mostly, straight out of the box with maybe some PE parts to create my vision of reality.

i always do some research, even if its just to see if other people have had problems...............google is a wonderful tool....and youtube.....theres a couple of sites i go on that do walkarounds which can be useful

I collect as many photos as I can both inside and out side. Great reference pictures out there.


On choice I go by the interest history of a book i have read. In the case of Afghanistan the news and indepth reports. Just try and get into the whole thing.

I usually let my imagination take hold with a bit of what I consider to be practical. But then most of my modelling is either "chopped up" or how I want it to look ........ I known some people go for as close they can get in the way of accuracy, but as long as I'm happy with how it looks then that's good enough for me.......... On the rare occasion where I'm building something out of the box. Then I do look to get as many reference photos as I can ........ My GAZ TIGER build is a good example....... The destructions for colours and detail are not particularly accurate or practical for a military vehicle. So some will be different during the build.......

for me it sttarts with the idea,that pops in the head,


then the next step is start to do the research,what is needed,and can i get it,,


mostly use google for this or the name of what it is,


and if i can afford what ever it is i wont to make,
