    Help Microsoft 7

Changed recently from XP to 7.

On XP going into My Computer open a file of pictures and with icons chosen all the icons showed a mini picture.

On MS7 go into Computer and carry out the above procedure and all I get are icons of a lanscape scene on every icon.

Looked every where but can not find how, or if for that matter, I can display mini pictures as MS XP.

Matter of interest some thing seem to have gone backwards on 7 compared to XP. Show desk top is nearly off screen bottom right.

    Hi Laurie,

I am running Windows 7 and I the icons are mini versions of the pictures (thumbnails) for .jpg files, I do see the stylised landscape icon for the RAW files as Windows on its own cannot read these files. As this has happened during the switchover it sounds like a Windows setting is the issue.

Do the pictures open normally in Windows photoviewer?

Do you have them filed using other software like Adobe lightwave?

One possibility, see below in Control Panel, Appearance and Personalization, folder options, view the top box should be unticked as below.

Brilliant Dave. Changed that and all is as wanted. Grateful for your assistance.

My Control Panel, Control Panel, Appearance and Personalization just shows as Personalization but it has a separate Folders option which comes up the same as your computer. They seem to have lumped on yours a lot of bits which are separate on mine. Think yours is much better as all is there rather than doging back and forward. Mine is the home addition may be yours is the higher spec.

Is your Show Desk top in the bottom right corner ?

      Thanks again Dave.

Not a problem Laurie, my version is Home Premium, I do not have a show desktop icon, are you sure you're not on Windows 8?

No definitely 7 Dave. The show desk top is a little, very mini, blue icon bottom right hand corner next to the time/date. Stupid position for something used so often. On XP I could mount it on the task bar.

Hi Laurie, I went from XP to 7 myself & it took a while to get used to the new format. There is no icon for show desktop just put cursor in bottom right hand corner.

Er, guys, Windows 8.1 is current and it removes or allows you to change a lot of the stuff that people do not like about Windows 8 - personally I really dislike the look of 8, but if you are on 7, 8 and 8.1 then you will get a free upgrade to 10 when it is released. You may want to think about that, it is free within 1 year of it's release even if you are running a pirated version.

That said, it is never a good idea to remain on a really old OS simply because the support is reduced and that is never a good thing and you can't beat the price of a windows 10 upgrade initially.

Personally I will change mine from 7 to 10 on one machine, the other in Mint linux.

That is a good idea Neil. That is provided I do not have to buy another machine to match the ability of 10. To get from XP to 7 I had to buy a second hand machine. Also I lost a lot of my old software as 7 would not support it.

                  John.
There is on my edition of 7 John a little blue icon. Does appear to me that my edition of 7 is different from yours and Dave. I am on auto update so that seems strange. There is a way of putting "show desk top" on the task bar but looking at the instructions these things never seem to go my way.

Windows 7 doesn't have that icon as standard. The button bottom right serves this purpose as someone has already said. It is possible to create such an icon, either by downloading one ore creating your own, which might explain its presence on your machine.

As someone who uses various computers (Mac and Windows) with different operating systems as well as other systems which are either Mac, Windows or Linux based, I really believe it's just a matter of what you are used to.

Neil's point about lack of support for old operating systems is important too.

                    Cheers

                    Steve

Hi Laurie you can run some of the xp stuff windows 7 says it dosn't support if you run it in compatibility mode (it won't run all the xp stuff in it but a lot of it works.

Thanks Ken. Just I had Coral Draw and Autocad which are very nice programs but stupidly did not update when I could. They go back to MS 97 and both took OK right up to and including XP. But 7 tried loading but then they just failed when installing. Great shame now have to resort to my Laptop XP for those programmes. Life gets complicated.

Obviously Steve that is where my Icon for "show desk top". Shall persevere and get it on the task bar.

Have you tried installing them in compatibility mode.

To get back to your desk top, press the Alt key with your left hand thumb, keep it depressed and simultaneously press the Tab key (just above the Cap Lock key) and you will be their, it will show every window that's open, and if you keep pressing the Tab key you can cycle and pick which window to open.
