That'll be because at HMRC they are all on performance related pay ......... and their performance is jusdged on the amount of post they send ......... It is ridiculous. All the government departments waste money on pointless rubbish like this ........ I sold a car a while back. They then sent me a pointless letter confirming that I was no longer the registered keeper ...... and ten days later I got the reminder for the road tax for it ???? ....... I also had to renew my driving licence a while back ......... I got a letter from DVLA telling me my new driving licence was approved and would be sent out to me in 14 days. Great !!!! ........ I had received my new licence a week before I got that letter ????

Sounds about right Steve, no common sense. The government say they are cutting benefits or taxing disability benefits etc, yet they misuse and waste the most money!

If common sense was so common they would realise that all this legislation and red tape can not be inforced and will cost more to implement

At least your govt. isn't giving ISIS an open invitation to cross your borders and set up training camps INSIDE you own country ! or are theyo_O

......... Nah, we aint got as much room as you guys have for proper training camps ......... We just use the school playgrounds in birmingham apparently

It's not changed much over the years then, give you an idea of how far this goes back. I had a tax refund of six pence yep that's right two and a half pence new money, it was sent by post in the form of a cheque, I tore it up and threw it in the bin, it must have cost considerably more (what with someone checking to see that I had overpaid then getting someone to verify that and write the cheque)than it cost to post it.

I had one like this from Lloyds bank for 1p. So I sellotaped a penny to the account and posted it to them.

Hopefully it gave them a chuckle and made their day.

Problem is computerisation. Robotic stuff. Programme recently about how robots may take over. News for them it is already happening.

If you look at it the other way around wouldn't you be more upset if you got a bill for £20,000.00!

We had a guy over here, a so called celebrity, that got a tax bill for Kr 1,75 that is about 15pence. It was a giro slip this would cost him 45p to pay in the post office or 50p to pay at his bank.

Was he annoyed? You bet he was.

The tax office was totally cold. "all tax debts must be collected" they could not explain why they had sent a giro card and not an electronic payment notice...

Yes indeed, though they'd have to have made a mistake

I'm not really annoyed by the bill, I just think there is a problem with a system that sends out a demand for such a small amount when it could easily have been added to the bill for income tax and the other class of NIC which I will have to pay by July 1st anyway.

I think Laurie is probably right to blame automation. These bills and letters are generated automatically without human input. This means the application of common sense, if we credit HMR&C with having any, is not possible.

As for me, I'll just pay the bill, I don't have any choice

Having been self employed all my working life and having to do all my own returns etc. I gave up on trying to make sense of the hmrc many years ago.I decided in 2012 to take a break from work and live off my savings for a while I took 18months off and informed the hmrc at that time. I decided to go back to the rat race in sept 2013 but as an employee so my tax and national insurance is now dealt with by others.A nice steady job I thought to see me through the next ten years or so as I have no intention of working until I'm 65 as I feel the age of 60 is a more realistic age for retirement.I am now receiving late return penalty letters demanding £100.00 for the year 2012-2013 (my year out) I've just sent the third one back with another detailed description of why I'm not going to pay there demands but I feel that no one is actually reading these as the norm is a week later I recieve another automated demand.I did phone them to try and sort it out but after being left hanging for 15mins listening to an automated voice telling me they were busy I hung up.So after trying to phone them and write to them I am no further forward in resolving this issue.But to be honest after all my years of experience with hmrc I knew I was going to have to go and pay that big building a visit and speak personally with one of the minions who work there and get a form signed in blood stating I'm exempt for any monies for the year 2012 - 2013 so next week I'll be paying them a visit in the meantime I'm sure I'll be getting another late return penalty letter

A good friend was made redundant (badly) a few years ago, when his employer went bust. He very quickly set himself up as a sole trader in a self employed business. Within a year HMR&C were after him demanding a substantial sum because the company from which he had been made redundant had him on the wrong tax code and since it no longer traded in the UK he was deemed responsible for the error. He explained that he had been left without a job, with zero redundancy (apart from some government minimum) and had anyway been a PAYE employee. As he was just setting up in business a demand for a substantial sum in tax was not exactly helpful. It still took nearly two years to get them off his back.

Reflecting on his experience I'm really not that bothered by a £5.35 bill
