    To 'Go public' or P.M.?

Let's say someone on Scale Models wants help with a particular effect he wants to achieve with his latest model, so he posts a question on the forum.

This is read by a member who has done just what he is enquiring about.

    Here lies a possible dilemma......

Does the member post to say the effect can be seen on his such and such diorama for all to see and risk someone thinking it's just an excuse to resurrect a forgotten dio., or other such negative thoughts. I'm not for one second suggesting anyone would, but you never know....

Or, does the member P.M. the person to avoid such things and in doing so deny other people the chance of gaining some ideas?

    Any thoughts chaps?

    Cheers,

    Ron

I say go for it Ron, theres so many new members joining its got to be helpful for not just the member enquiring but many others wondering how to get desired effect, so what if the dio that this effect is dragged from the past, its serving a purpose of showing the member how to to said effect, just my 2ps worth.

    Cheers

      Hello Ron

I've faced this very problem do you or don't you

I did tell a person to have a look at one of my dios on here and the thought popped into my head is he going to think he just wants me to look at his dip

But if it helps and the other person sees it as help which i did when somebody else on here told me to look at his dios it's ok it's only reference at the end of the day

If I would ask you a question and you have worked or done something with it please show me by all means it all helps

I have no hesitation in agreeing with Darren above.Go "public" and link to the previous work. I've done it myself a couple of times. It's not about reviving an old thread featuring a model I happen to have made,I'm trying to help someone out in exactly the same way that I'm sure you would. Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. This is a modelling forum and we should all feel free to show our models to illustrate a technique,or anything else, whenever the model was built.

        Cheers

The forum is all about helping others if questions are pm'ed then the only person that gets the benefit from the reply is the person that asked the question, if it's asked on the forum everyone gets to benefit from it

I would also say go public. Nothing more annoying than seeing a real good question, that you would also like to know the solution to, only to find the next post says; PM sent.

I agree with everyone above, its fine to link to some of your own work to illustrate a technique or whatever , like steve ive done it myself a few times ,not to mention linking to other peoples work as well .Its all just spreading the knowledge and helping our fellow members so wheres the harm? I dont think any of the members here would see it as anything but constructive help. cheers tony

Yep, go public, it is good to look back on someones work, the new folks may never see such fantastic results, bring them to life again and knock the dust off.

                  Cheers

As a noob I would say public. I actually spend many hours looking at the photo's on here, but it's great when people post a pictorial answer when I ask a question. Everyone is so helpful, I don't think there would be any issues at all.

I agree with all above - public - let others benefit from it, no matter who's made the dio

I cannot see any problems linking to your own or anyone else's build to demonstrate a technique in answer to a question. It is not self promotion, it is answering a question, something this forum prides itself on. Go public, the answer and question could be invaluable to someone who may not even thought of the question, and this does not apply to newbies. I often see questions answered on here that I had never thought of and so teach me something.

                              Hi Ron,

I gotta agree with everyone, go public. I don't think there's anyone on this forum who puts up pictures just to show off - although there are lots here who have skills worth showing off!

Someone commented about it being good to 'dust off' some of the oldies from time to time if they're illustrating something. Quite right too. How many times do you listen to tunes/watch films/read books that you've already heard/seen/read before? I got Zeppelin playing as I type and I've lost count the number of times I've listened! I've never heard of anyone who only does these things once!

If you reckon showing an old picture might help, go for it Ron. No-one here will mind I'm sure.
