Just got my service done on my car

couple of days ago my car went in for its service and this was a full service , now I usually use my local ford dealer but this time they were way too expensive, £220 I was quoted and when I queried that price they said it was because of the genuine ford parts , I said I get back to them

I rang kwik fit and was quoted £140 all in so I took the car there.

I have just realised ( yeah I know I'm slow ) that this genuine parts excuse is a bit of a fib as I've worked in car spares and I've actually working for engineering companies that make the stuff so when they say ' GENUINE ' parts in reality they meen a 'GENUINE ' ford badge , that's an £80 saving for something that is quite possibly made in the same factory but without the ford stamp.

    The mind boggles

One of the boats I had let in water due to an engine air inlet being positioned to back to front letting spray water to get into the engine compartment.

Two engines and the water collected in the engine compartment lapped up to the two starter motors. Ordered one through Volvo Penta by a Jersey

agent. £200.(about 30 years ago) The other starter still started but then got the hiccups.

Took the hiccuped one to my Marine Engineer to strip. Looked at it waste he says time for a new one. Hell I said another £200. Lets look he said. Replacement £112.

So I says but is it genuine ? Yes same company made both new ones. Howzat. The Volvo Penta starter left England went to Sweden who plonked profit

on it plus taxes plus delivery charges. Plus profit from the Jersey agent.

The second starter came direct to Jersey from the factory. One delivery charge. Cut out two profits and taxes.

So QED Alan you are probably spot on "quite possibly made in the same factory but without the ford stamp".

I was once quoted £120 each for two front tyres (Continental) by my Audi dealer. I got the same two tyres (and I mean the same make and specification) for £70 each at a local tyre place about a mile from my house saving myself a nifty ton!

As you say, the mind boggles.

      Cheers

That's why they're called Main Stealers in the trade!

You'll always pay exorbitant prices for OEM parts, whereas pattern parts (usually manufactured by the same company) will be much cheaper.

Here is the real story :

you didn't save a ton... You spent it on models and told the misses that the tyres were full price and now I have a cunning plan...

I personally would never take my car anywhere near a quik fit! Had to go to one cos I was desperate for new tyres they badly scratched my alloys got sealent allover wheels and didn't even attempt to clean it off. Then when I was driving away found they hadn't even balance them. When I complained there response was " what do you expect we only did it as a favour for you"

Not the only one. One of my mates dropped his car off for mot went round corner to get coffee and saw his car being thrashed up the road by one of the quick fit employees. He went straight back. Filmed them driving back into the workshop showed the manager and they still denied doing it!

Went to Vauxhall for my MOT the guy rang up and said it failed on 2 front tires and it needed a new window screen when I told the guy on the phone funny that as the drivers side front was only replaced 2 months before as I curbed it and burst it the 2 tires that need replacing suddenly changed to the 2 rear ones?

Asked for a price on there cheapest tires was told the cheapest they do was £80 a pop? and the window screen would cost £300 said to him no thanks but if I take it off you and get the stuff done myself I would still get my free re-test? he said yes.

so drove it half a mile down the road to a Mr Tyers got the 2 tires replaced for £68 and while I waited for that rang auto glass to come out and have a look at it. They called round to my house and the guy said it was just a chip and we will gel it cost me a £10. Told the guy that Vauxhall had quoted me £300 for a new wind screen and he said the robbing B@&T@£ds would have just called them out to gel it and charged me £300.

So got the work done myself with a bit of running around for for £78 rather then the £460 they wanted to charge me took it back for the free re-test and it past.

If the sales guy that rang me up had not had tried to be so greedy and quoted me about half that cost I would have been tempted but he was to greedy. When I went to collect it and spoke to his manager he apologized and gave me a free test for next year took it back the following year and they then tried to charge me £80 for 2 headlight bulbs and to turn a screw 3/4 turn to adjust the beam height. I just laughed at the guy and said will pick it up and take it some place else. Got the 2 bulbs for £8 and didn't even charge to turn the screw. Main dealers are crooks!!!!!

'oh...and that dosnt include the v.a.t. sir'

fortunatly at the time i worked for toyota at the factory where the corolla was made, so one was acquired

i still work in the automotive industry, we make more money per part selling parts for the service side than for the current production line cars

Yep, can be an issue regarding dealers. My car is a motability one from Vauxhall so is different, although the car is always serviced same day, picked up and dropped off-even valeted. Tyres are from Quickfit and they have always been spot on. When I had my own car I always got brakes, tyres and exhausts from local Hi-Q...top guys and a great service.

Anyway, I prefer always the official dealer.
