It seems i was too quick in thinking i had got rid of the problem. The icons now all work and i can indeed surf the web once again (sometimes) but the pc seems to lock up/lag at times and in some cases quite badly. when i use ctrl, alt, del to bring up the start task manager it can take up to 90 secs for it to appear. Something isn't right

Have a look in "task manager" and see what process(es) are using the most memory. Google them and find out what they are and if they need to be running.

For example when I use my o2 dongle a process called tscui.exe runs and throttles my lap top. I stop it and everything, including my mobile connection, works fine.

      Cheers

Could be the C drive on it's way out, have you defragged it recently?

          Hi all

My best advice to everyone is buy an Imac, as I did 4 years ago, you will never have any of these problems.

I doubt that Andy but you never know.

Allyne, when you open the task manager at a time when your machine is chugging along have a look at the values shown at the bottom,Processes,CPU usage and commit charge. I'll bet that the commit charge is very high percentage of the total. You would hope it would be around 25%,I've just checked on this very old lap top I'm using and the figures are 615M/2440M as an example. I suspect that something is running on your machine and monopolising this memory slowing everything else down.

            Cheers

That's very good advice actually. I seem to recall that when I installed a Belkin wifi card I had a total slowdown and found that there was one process that was totally superfluous and once it had been stopped we were cooking on gas...

My lap top is six or seven years old. I often leave it in insecure locations at work and frankly,if it gets nicked,I don't care! Everything is backed up,I have all my photos and notes on a seperate drive.

Every now and then I go through and stop all the spurious processes that install themselves from running on start up. This means that despite its age, lack of RAM etc this machine performs acceptably in the role I have for it,I'm not rendering video or anything! You may be surprised how much of your computers resources are being used by completely pointless processes running in the background.

                Cheers

                  Hi All,

I too have just installed Chrome, and it hung the second time I used it! I was on a forum doing my bit, it flashed up a message saying that chrome has possibly ran out of memory. Which reminds me must go and redo that message. It's a shame that the most unreliable OS is the most popular, still aint that typical!!

                  Regards

                  Mel.

Following advice from a more IT savvy friend I deleted all the browser data which both freed up a huge chunk of space on my hard drive (is the chrome cache unlimited?) and seemed to cure the problem. I got cold feet and uninstalled the thing anyway.I'm not a computer expert and don't know if this was just me,I'm just reporting a personal experience.

Well i found out what was causing the lagging. My hard drive made a horrible screeching noise followed by the blue screen of death. Now it won't boot up and just clicks. So that'll be slightly broken then. So might not be around for a few days whilst i get a new hard drive and try to figure out how to install windows onto it.

                        Hi there Allyne

That doesn't sound good. Is it a PC or laptop? either way, and if your confident about repairing it, you'll need to be careful when installing any components as a little static from your hands can damage it big time. Best bet it is to take it to a professional its worth it in the long run paying a little extra for peace of mind. By the way have got a backup of all your files and folders if not who ever you get to fix it would be able to attempt to do some data recovery for you. As far as the windows reinstallation they should be able to take care or that to. Good luck with getting it repaired.
