    Bits and Bytes

I thought I'd share an experience I had with one of our nations top internet service providers recently.

During a call about something else the helpful employee suggested I might like to increase by broadband connection speed to 100 megabytes/sec. I don't blame him for attempting to exploit a sales opportunity.

'I surely would' I said, 'if only that were possible'.

'It is' said employee, 'it's double what you have now'.

'No it's not I have an up to 50 megabits/sec connection, which works out at (doing rapid mental arithmetic) just over 6 megabytes/sec', I replied.

'That's not right' came the reply, 'bits and bytes are the same'.

'No they are not' says I, 'I've just told you the difference'

'That's just your opinion' came the reply.

    I hung up.

    Cheers

Those people are precious.....'.. They know absolutely bigger all but think they do........ A long time back I was trying to sort an insurance claim...... I had to fax some documents to them........ I phoned a few hours later to check on what was happening......... and was told they didn`t have them yet.......and "sometimes faxes get held up in THE PHONE LINES AND COME THROUGH LATER ON"........ The sad thing was he genuinely believed that

I was looking at buying a car and the sales guy guaranteed that he could get me into a new car for less a month than I was buying...you know the drill a higher spec, less money blah blah.

So I said give me some figures. So off he toddles and 10 mins later comes back with some figures, all-even for a the base model was more than I was paying per month.

I pointed this out and he looked puzzled. I said his initial guarantee could not be done as the finance on my other car was involved in the maths-only cheaper option was to have the years to pay back extended to 5 years not 3. He again looked puzzled and I was getting bored so told him I would think about and turned to leave...his parting shot was I was getting a brand new car. I had the other one for two years...so not exactly ancient. He just couldn't get it or understand...I smiled and went home.
