    Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo

I've been watching the Tattoo from Edinburgh and caught the U.S. Air Force Honour Guard drill team twirling their rifles - we like to take the pi$$ out of the yanks but that display was absolutely brilliant.

This link shows you what they can do from a display they made in Norway.

On the bench: Airfix 1/48 Sea King HC4, Revell 1/24 Trabant.
Coming soon: Airfix 1/72 Phantom FGR2.
Just finished: Airfix 1/48 Stuka & Airfix 1/72 Sea King HC4.

Yes I viewed that as well Rick. The sergeant was brave. I assume they

have blunted those blade on the bayonets.

    Fantastic show. Been their twice.

Sat up in the gods on a chilly August evening. What an atmosphere.

At the end right on the top of Edinburgh Castle a piper stands and plays.

It is just incredible. Then every one stands and sings Ould Lang Syne.

    That is just something.

        That was awesome.

In other news I had a ticket to the Tattoo this year from someone who works there, its the pre shows they do before the public shows, unfortunately I was working in Norway and missed it :'( Sarah went with our friend and Lucy. Apparently Lucy was glued to the screen for the TV version tonight.

        Maybe next year!

Great entertainment and a very good display of precision. I had a look online, their manual is free to view. The bayonets are real, chromed and sharp, Laurie. Interestingly they secure them to the rifles with black electrical tape.

I've always wanted to see the Queen's Colour Squadron of the RAF Regiment. They perform their entire displays and drill ceremonies without any word of command. Maybe some here have had the distinction of serving with them? http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafregiment/squadrons/63_sqn_history.cfm

I had only one opportunity to see one changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, and unfortunately they were the usual red-tunic beefeater wearing types. Still a great sight all the same for someone from NZ

Yes Joe they are good saw them in one of my visits to the Tattoo. The audience was

completly quiet all you could here is the noise of the boots. You become mesmorized.

Amazing as the RAF is not noted for "Gaurds" like marching.

The RAF Regiment hold the record for the longest continuous display without any commands been spoken, think he said 23 hours 55 mins!!! 2,700,00 foot and rifle movements!!!

Oh and the bayonet's on the Honour guard are sharp, had some of the guys stop at a base on the way to a show back in the 90's. Not the typical US Army guys, nice bunch. Inspired one of the lads on guard to offer up a little honour salute when the officers were leaving for the night, boy did he get a roasting the next day lol

I think during the summer months the palace guards are the preserve of the foot guards. Occasionally you'll see Royal Marines, Ghurkhas, RAF regt, or other army regiments on duty. On very rare occasions some Commonwealth nations provide the guards, Australia being one that comes to mind.

There were three rocks attached to 230 Sqn when I was in Northern Ireland, I have no idea what they did but they were good lads and we got them involved in aircraft maintenance sometimes to give them an insight to what us techies did all day.......then we'd get drunk in the Sqn bar.
