wow duncan..you took it on the sea!!! was that not a bit scary? surly even a medium sized wave could have turned you over??
Scariest time was when RN sea King came for a close look while I was off Portland...thirty tons of downwash nearly had me IN the Channel not on it ! Took them a while to realise that I was waving them off not just being friendly. Wonder what the radio traffic to their control was like. "This Oscar Romeo, we have RO5 on our starboard, over" Control " You are mistaken , RO5 is in the Gulf. Over" Sea King " We have positive ID , RO5 is making 5 knots , heading 280 degrees ETA Portland Harbour 17 minutes, Crew has acknowledged , over". etc etc. Beer in the mess that night I`ll bet.You are right , it is strictly a calm day sailor. Topside weight difficulty plus big windage when side-on. Got to ride it like a yacht hanging over the side when I`ve got to go cross-wind. Tends to submarine when heading into waves if the space between waves is a certain length. Sends a full lap-full of chilly water along the flight-deck into the hatch. There is a non-scale drop-keel/centrboard ,that helps a bit.
