my experience is the same as Dougie's. I went onto the Dell website and basically they were saying that my laptop was far to old to even be considered for updated drivers etc. So I went ahead and did the upgrade anyway and everything worked perfectly, all programmes, wireless, printer second screen, web cam. For anyone with one my laptop is a Dell Lattitude 4300 for anyone with one.
Windows 10!!

Kept my laptop in XP.
There are a number of better things on 7 compared to Xp but a good number of things have been ditched on seven. Hence my reluctance to jump into 10. Also have been getting Ten thrown at me Free. Why ?

went from windows XP to 10 and really like it, there were a few teething problems at first but soon sorted them out, everything has been working fine so far (touch wood) and since I sorted the start up menu out it fires up a lot quickerComment

You just can't keep up with technology these days. Every year, new gadgets and devices are being brought out. If you bought a new phone and/or a new computer/laptop etc, every time a new operating system was introduced, it would cost you an arm and a leg.
I have two computers that I use quite a lot. One is a Sony VA10 desktop, which has everything built into the back of the screen (a bit like an upright laptop) This has Widows XP installed, which can handle older games like Microsoft Flight & Train Simulator, Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 and Submarine games like the Silent Hunter series, 3, 4 & 5. Most of these games will run on either Windows 7 or 8, but better with XP. So if I want to play these games, I just fire up the Sony computer.
My other computer is a HP Pavillion G6 Laptop (this one) running with Windows 8.1 which I use for some more modern games and everyday browsing, and general purpose use. I was tempted to upgrade to Windows 10, but then after reading about all the problems with it, decided not to bother. Better to stick with the devil you know, than the devil you don't know, is my advice. My two computers quite happily do everything that I want them to do, without complicating matters with upgrades etc.
It won't be long before Windows 11 pops up on the scene and soon after that we will be on Windows 12. I think the best thing is to stick with what you have and only buy a new computer, when you just can't manage with what you have, because it is too far behind modern operating systems.
The only people who benefit, are the manufacturers, with your hard earned cash. You don't need to buy a new computer, every time something new comes out to replace it.
We are living in an age where everyone has to have the latest gadget and the fastest mobile phone which is even your wrist watch as well. CRAZY!Comment

As to the "Why Free?" Well, we all know the answer to that! There's no such thing as a free lunch - but I prefer Sir John Benjamin's definition of "free" - fully included in the price!
No doubt 7 will follow XP in a couple of years. Up the spout again.

If we are going to talk old computers, this was one of the first I used, the operating system was cpm and it had 5.25 in floppy drives and the case was wood.

I switched from Windows 7 to 10 and really, really like it. The only thing that happened when I installed it was a low screen resolution. A quick Google search found that it was pretty common. Reboot the machine twice... voila! problem solved. Works like a champ and everything I run is compatible.
As for Windows 8/8.1, I cannot begin to find enough words that would accurately describe my complete and utter loathing of that operating system. Had it on a computer that I bought new and was nothing but trouble. Hated the layout. Compatibility issues with the programs I was using, etc.Comment
