A question on solder

Does anyone know if you need to use a special solder and flux for brass work?

Hi David, no you should be fine with standard flux-paste or liquid and solder, however, make sure you have a 40w iron or a good flame torch. The standard irons are 20w and the metal dissipates the heat too quickly, the heat provided by a 40w is the same output but the wattage provides a more constant heat point.


Get a chisel point end if using a soldering iron, the standard point tips are fine for 'dab' work, but the chisel provides a larger surface area for heat contact and so the soldering will be quicker and easier and give a stronger joint.

Depending on the size you will almost certainly get away with standard electricians multi-core solder. Nice and quick and easy. Bhe lads in the RC boat world use this for brass mast arrangements and hand rail manufacture to good effect.

...........and make sure you solder in a well ventilated room (Window open). The "Rosin" fumes aren't nice and aren't good for you.
