And I've been a bit of a Finnish armor nut since watching Tali Ihantala 1944, so I would like to get a Heng Long KV-1 to start with. I was looking at the tamiya one but it is a fair bit more expensive, and is not a KV-1e, as I would like to make one like in the film. so, If I do get the HL one, what sorts of upgrades would be recommended, and options are available?

 Hi Norm

I'm in the middle of an RC build at the moment - the Tamiya 1/16 Tiger 1 (although it's been put on hold for the next couple of months whilst I complete 9 commission builds).

 This is the thread:

 http://www.scale-models.co.uk/jan-mar-2011-group-build-normandy/11905-big-bocage-tiger.html

This shows some of the extensive mods I'm making to my Tiger, but upgrades (I would think) apply to any RC tanks regardless of make:-

 Tracks

 Suspension

 Gear boxes

 Motors

I haven't built any Heng Long RC tanks but many on this forum have and I'm sure their advise will see you right.

As for my build; the suspension, tracks and metal running gear were a must, all the other stuff such as cables, cable attachments, grills, and etch clasps are 'cosmetic niceties'. As I wanted my build to be as much about being an accurate Tiger 1 as it is a 'fun' RC tank to run these 'add ons' were also important to me.

In the end it's all down to what kind of model/RC tank you want. A more accurate model will doubtless have more fragile parts so therefore will not be as rugged an RC tank.

I realise I've probably not answered your question but I hope I've given you some things to think about.

All the best with the KV

 Paul

thanks for the reply, and I will watch your build, anyone else have advice? by the way, here is the scene from the film that made me want to do this, (great film over all, great story and history, all original tanks, get a copy if you haven't seen it, brilliant!) starting at 6:43 YouTube - Tali-Ihantala 1944 (2007) with English subs (3/12) continued YouTube - Tali-Ihantala 1944 (2007) with English subs (4/12)Comment

Just watched the clip - looks a good film. The tanks have interesting hard edge camo too. I'd be interested to see your interpretation of the KV.

Have you tried these RC stores:-

Welsh Dragon Models specializes in the sale of upgrade parts and accessories for 1/16 scale radio controlled model tanks.

_Tankzone: Your one stop shop for RC Models & Accessories, Diecasts & Wargaming Miniatures

You may find some useful bits and pieces (you may already know these stores but just in case...)

 All the best

I'll take a look at those. Just for future reference, I'm in New York, if that affects anything, but I should still be able to get from those shops.Comment

Ok, can anyone recommend where to get the tank it's self? I've seen them listed on ebay for about $100 or so, but I'll need to look again at other sources. Do you people think ebay sources are trustworthy?Comment

well, just looked on amazon, and they have the KV-1 for about $80 there. one more question, and please, I would like some more advice, but you have been very helpfull paul, no worries there. Anyway, question, What sort of paint should I use. Would standard model paint's work, like I use for indoor display models? Would these paints require any sort of special treatment or weather proofing, because the tank will be getting wet and such.Comment

Might like to do a tiger at some point, but I would like to do one of the Hungarian ones (I'm half Hun.) What types of paints did you use on it? I will re-read your thread to try and get what info from it I can.Comment
