Remembrance and Armistice day are tomorrow. A two minutes of silence and little movement by humans and traffic. Fat chance.
Fascinated as always with how things came about here is what I found out.
Armistice day is the day a document was signed to end the war between Germany and all those who joined to fight Germany. Designated as the 11:11:1018.
After the Second World War Great Britain and Northern Island changed the day to Remembrance Day although the Armistice Day is still respected by many
Poppy day. Poppies. The poppy came about from the poem Flanders Fields and from the blood spilt on the field of battle. Adopted by the American Legion to commemorate American soldiers killed in that war (1914–1918). They were then adopted by military vetrans groups in parts of the former British Empire: the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Cenotaph. Lutyens. The architect's design Is an empty tomb in remembrance of those who died elsewhere. The design theme used after in many memorials.
Canada seems the first to adopt Remembrance day in 1931. The USA adopted All Vetrans Day (the all now dropped).
So there we are. I hope tomorrow all will respect not war but those who gave their all.
