Glue smudges

Hi yes it's me with another question


As this is my return to model making I have some glue smudges on certain areas of my first model, can any one suggest a way of removing these prior to priming with an airbrush, I have tried to be careful with the build but I have hand shaking problems due to a medical condition and being a perfectionist I would like to remove those unfortunate glue smudges.


Any advice greatly accepted

Careful use of fine grades of wet and dry emery paper used wet, start at say 600 then on to 800,1000,1200 and if you've got it 1500.


I understand the difficulty you must have with shakes etc but gentle and easy with emery paper should provide you with the ideal pre priming finish.

Wearing gloves helps prevent such accidents - I buy nitrile gloves from eBay as they're cheap & non-powdered

I'm with Dave above, but unless the marks are really significant I'd start even finer (say 1200 grit) and then continue down to polishing. You want to try to avoid sanding off anything but the mark.


We all get glue where it shouldn't go from time to time

I was going to add that you might want to try micromesh sanding/polishing pads to get a finer finish but Steve beat me to it to a point!, they are great, I got a set a few weeks ago and have never looked back, wish I had got them a long time ago........could have rescued some models from my awful attempts at getting a good result!

I use a fibre glass eraser, great for tight spaces.

Just had a practice with some extra fine sanding sticks from Johns shop and this has worked well and I finished the sanding off by using a buffing one and these have worked very well, no sign of any glue...next job is to set up for the priming....then it's just the fiddly bit with painting the wheels by hand etc...

Hey phil. I have the same problem, and have ended up with glue fingerprints on parts.


If its possible, ive sanded the area best as i could and used some filler to level it all off.


Theres no magical way unfortunately, the glue melts the plastic, so any damage is permanent in the plastic, rather than being on it like paint or primer is.

HI Dave and all fellow model makers, by off chance I have found a way to remove any glue whilst it is wet, t\hat being using a baby wet wipe or a product of similar liking. I just wiped the small splodge straight away and it removed it with out the plastic melting....yippee job done no worries

Oh yes but it seems to work very well...Collis my wife says god know what's in them but its the best thing to get red wine out of anything but you have to be quick and use them whilst the wine etc is still wet....As yet I have not caught her sucking the wine out of the wipe lol.

Nice one Phil, that's a very handy tip and noted. As Dave said you have to be quick, I used to able to get a baby wipe with one hand when my kids were babies!
