    Would you hope for discount?

I've started drawing up my wish list for when I move and create my new super deluxe man cave and as part of my plans I want to have entire ranges of paints at my fingertips. So I'm planning on ordering entire paint ranges in Vallejo, AK, Mr Hobby etc, I'm talking about getting the boxsets as well. but should I seek a discount?

I know it may be over kill and most likey will not use half of them but I figure if I can afford it why not, I'm not hurting anyone

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts

Only buy what you need. No point on spending cash even if you have it. If you have a large order then go for a discount but hobby shops are not great with discounts and most charge about the same for paints. You can get Vallejo from Germany but the cost depends on the Euro rate which at present is in our favour.

The problem is I build some many varied subjects I'm forever going out to grab a pot of this and that, so I figure while I am flush just blitz the whole lot and save any more trips that normally cost me more anyway in petrol/parking

Well, obviously it's your money to spend as you like, and I can certainly see the appeal of having complete collections. In reality you'll probably find there are loads of colors you simply never use just sitting there. If I was in your position I'd draw up a list of the core colors I know I'd use a lot, add a few 'very likely to use' colors, but then buy multiples of the colors you use most (I already do this, having lots of blacks, whites, generic grey, interior greens etc on hand). A nice dilemma to be facing though

Defiantly worth trying for a discount if you are buying that much

If you're in the position to purchase the whole kit caboodle of paints .......just do it and definately ask for discount though, I got some vallejo and ak interactive paint sets from my lms the other day, I saved myself £8 all up, would have come to £37 for both.........I asked if I could have a bit knocked off, just me being cheeky and they took of just over twenty per cent and wasn't even black friday!

In most cases, a percentage is factored in to final retail prices to allow for discounts etc..........so go for it, nothing ventured nothing gained......If you don't ask you don't get. ..........simples!

Why dont you speak to john? Perhaps with his abilities to buy bulk anyway, maybe of you placed an order for a whole load of paints, accessories, weathering items, etc he might be able to come up with a deal that would save you money.

Of course, id expect him to want payment before ho goes and orders a few grands worth of stuff!

If Adrian orders from John, I hope John orders double by mistake, and Adrian sends the excess 957 paints to me............I would even appreciate the odd enamel too.........not fussy really...........enamels or acrylics...........hang on that reminds me of a thread on here........I'll just see if it's still on here...........NOT!!!!!!

I have ordered a few of the Vallejo sets and have found that I have only used a small percentage of the colors that come in the set. I don't know how fast you build your models, but at the rate I build, I can get a kit, check out the colors I need, do a quick inventory, then order what I need. The colors come in way before I am ready to actually apply them.

And, I would be more frustrated in having the color on the shelf, only to discover that it is unusable due to age when I am finally ready for it.

If I built kits really quick, and my range of subjects was quite broad, my opinion might be different, but these are things to consider.

Thing is, with vallejo, you dont just use say a green 71 094, you also use 71 093, 71-095 and possibly 71-092 to moderate the colours, mixing them in different percentages.

When i went over to model air, from tamiya, this was one of the biggest positives, and i did buy some pre-made kits, but i always ended up gping back and buying more.

Personally, if i could rewind and do it again, id just go ahead and buy the entire model air range, as im only about two bottles short of it now, and spent about £40 more!!

Interesting problem - whatever you do, you'll be wrong! But as you say can afford a large bulk purchase consider these points--

It's better to have and not need than to need and not have. It would be annoying to have spent time & effort choosing, and ordering as individuals all the paints you think you might need, only to find that in, say, a couple of months there's just one colour you have to order as an additional one off.

You might even find there is something extra you fancy doing in the future, but didn't order the paint for.

Think about the way a business works. If they have a long list of individual items, in this case paints, to select, pack, invoice, and so on that will take time, effort, & money; thus they will be less willing to give you a discount

You are looking at the number of items per order, so if you select boxed sets the number of items will be less, even if the total number of paints is more. And square - ish boxes of ready boxed paints will also be faster and easier to pack

Or to put it another way, it will be easier for the supplier to send you several boxed sets as one order than many individual bottles; thus he will be more willing to give you a discount.

So even if there are more bottles in several boxed sets, the price might well come out cheaper than fewer bottles sent as a load of individuals.

Alright, that last point was a bit laboured, but I hope you get the message

And while you're at it, stock up on glue, filler, abrasives, and so on, if you think you might need them. You will probably reach the threshold for free p & p too.

Boxed sets of vallejo are not worth buying in bulk. You can pick seven sets, and have two or three bottles out of each pack duplicated, so you end up having on,y half what you wanted, and paid extra for it.

I know because i found that out myself!

But hey ho, sometimes its better to just do what you want, as everyone has their own opinions.

If I was John or another model shop proprietor I would be happy to take the order, a bit of picking and packing is worth it irrespective of discount or not...........I've spent in the past, time scrabbling around on a deck of dirt covered lorry under a mud encrusted 6 ton digger in the peeing rain, howling winds in the dark with all but a small floodlight to see with, miles from home all for the princely sum of £7.25 an hour, I would have given my right arm to be a model shop owner and pick and pack paints........might have been slow just using my left arm, but it beats tying down diggers for a pittance!
