Today I was very fortunate to purchase a small piece of aviation history for my collection of aviation artefacts, and above all they are from one of my heros Sir Frank Whittle, designer of the jet engine, the artifacts consist of his slide rule, brass drawing compasses and ink reservoir, complete with brass protractor,I have never seen such ornate and beautiful instruments as these they are absolutely top class and befitting such a genius.
When Sir Frank was snapped up by the Americans ( shame on the Brits for not recognising his skills and foresight ) the tools were given to his right hand man as a thanks for the dedication that his team had given him,he too recently passed away and these historical items are now in my custody as a result.
So as I use the compasses on my latest design project I can spare a few thoughts for what they have helped create in the past by that great man of aviation.
