Aircraft Tanks & Trains

Up until now I have been obsessed (only 9 months) with building Aircraft. At the same time I have wandered to have a look at Tanks & Train & wondered.

Any of you who have attempted two of these type ? Are there major differences in modeling the different types ? Are any easier to build or vice versa more difficult ?

Seems that tanks & associated things are more suitable for dioramas which I would also like to try at some time although aircraft seem to fill the agenda at the moment.

I find no difference in building a tank or train to an aircraft.Taking your time as you build them and plenty of dry fitting does help a lot.

I have built a few Revell aircraft kits. They were ok, a poor fit in some cases but good fun. Then came a new AirFix mould of a 109 messerschmidt (spelling), much better fit and still good fun. I then hit my first tank, this was a Tamiya kit. I think i was a little scarred to tell the truth, starting something different i guess and heard great things about the build quality of the Tamiya kits. Its the same principle for cutting the bits out of the sprue, sanding down and fitting before gluing etc. It was the same but also completely different, if that makes sense. You do everything the same but the model comes together differently. If that makes sense.

Not tried a train.... doesnt float my boat.

I've heard it said that armour is generally easier to build than aircraft on the basis that if you miss a seam or something doesn't quite line up properly, you can cover up your mistakes with mud or load extra gear on it. I'm sure nobody on this excellent forum would stoop to such a despicable trick - except me of course! I used it for my FW 190 GB! :lol

i've always liked how much you can dirty up a tank or truck without it looking wrong.

I have to say i have a bit of a railway theme going on at the moment myself, after building the 1/35 kreigs locomotive and then the morser karl geret with railway wagons i've found myself a little hooked. I am near to completeing my leopold gun dio and iam awaiting the arrival of my of my Dora railway gun, i also have a BR86 Dampflocomotive to build which will be my next project.

Did the same thing myself for my Fw190 G.B. entry, didn't I Dave? lol

Laurie, I had one go at locos and that ended up on here as a train wreck diorama!!

Thanks men for all that info. Think I will have a go soon at a small tank. Do they do one with 10 pieces ?

Like that Ron, the train disaster. Had that experience with my second aircraft model. Thinking of buying a big hammer gets rid of the problem quick time & the frustration.

By the way Ron I have the egg ????.

Don't know of a 10 piece tank, but here's two Italeri 1/72 Tiger Tanks I did a while back, each one had only 13 pieces. They cost around £8/9 nowadays and you get two in a box for that! Great little models.....

Built some of the plastic Dapol loco kits but theyre not that brilliant, lots of warped or twisted parts,flash, oversize moulded on detail etc and the transfers are rubbish, but i guess thats what to expect for under £10. Probably best for a scrap steam loco diorama or with lots more effort, etched and brass detail parts and scratchbuilding a decent static display model can be built.
