You're after metallic effect paints i assume?

There are a couple of options

Humbrol do metalcote in aluminium, polished aluminium, steel and gunmetal, the last three polish to a nice shine and don't need any special undercoat.

Then there are Alclad specialist metal paints, chrome, stainless steel, aluminium etc etc, these require a gloss black basecoat and have to be sprayed on with an airbrush but they buff up superbly.

I use Alclad frequently and as m1ks says they advise a gloss black undercoat. I assure you that a normal primer is fine for all but the highly polished finishes. Alclad is easy-peasy to use but does have to be airbrushed.Originally posted by \Then there are Alclad specialist metal paints, chrome, stainless steel, aluminium etc etc, these require a gloss black basecoat and have to be sprayed on with an airbrush but they buff up superbly.

I agree with Steve about the primer. However, I think that the depth of colour is best over gloss black. I also think that the polished metal effect is best over gloss black. I am not saying You must use it, I just think it looks best.

I have also been lead to believe that the colours have been formulated for a black base.

As for the flat metal colours, I just blow them over the Grey primer and it works great.

Humbrol Metal coats are also good but are again better sprayed on.

PS If you are on facebook you can join the Humbrol page (and Airfix). A good idea as we can pester them to bringing things out. The more that ask and all that....Comment
