Ever wonder whats inside a water filter?

Curiosity got the better of me today as board whilst keeping an eye on the kids today whilst SWMBO went out!

Whilst changing the water filter I decided to hack it open to see what type of media was used and this is what I found.

As you can see the media is very fine and consist of small spheres and black particles that I guess are possibly carbon?

Not sure if it could be used in modelling in any way such as a texture to add to ground work but perhaps you have an opinion?

these can be used to make realistic looking rivets. use the end of a drill bit to make a small depression and stick the ball in...hey presto a line of rivets. you have sort the balls into approx same sizes though which could be a bit of a ball ache lol.

cant take credit for this one, i read it in a mates games workshop modelling book.
