Those strange little symbols hiding in your computer

    Howdy Guys,

Since this is the "chit chat" portion of the forum, and I had mentioned showing ya'll where to find those strange little symbols like the © ® ™ £ and others like the ± and even fractions like ¼ ½ ¾.

I am sure some of you know where they are, while others of us here might not. They are simple to find and very handy if you type alot of letters, or do drawings on your computer, or even have the need to represent calculations in a computer written text or drawing.

Ok, here we go, now I used windows 98 se so for those of you with windows XP (Xtreme Problems) , I extend my condolenses....lol just joking, the instructions may not be exact for XP as they are written here, but you can still find what I am about to tell you.

First, click "start", then scroll up to "programs", then to "accessories", then to "system tools". (For those of you using XP, you might not have to go to accessories to get to system tools depending on when your operating system was made).

Once in "system tools", search for "character map", click on it and a small gray box will appear similar to the one below:

At the top left of this box you will see a smaller box with the word "font" beside it and a "DROP DOWN" arrow on the right of that. This will allow you to select any font your computer has stored in it. Feel free to browse thru them and look around, you wont hurt anything.

Now to select one of these "characters" I mentioned above, look thru the various fonts and find the character you want. Once you have found it, "left click" directly on the symbol or character you desire, then look to the right side of the box and click "select". This will post the character/symbol into the small box on the right side marked "chacter to be copied".

When you get ready to use this character in a letter, drawing or email or whatever, simply click on the word "copy" in the character map box and then go back to your "work and hold down "ctrl" and hit the letter "v" to insert it in your work.

There are every sort of character or symbol you can imagine in the character map, and you can download even more fonts online to increase the number of fonts you have, you can even download foriegn language fonts so as that you can type in Русский язык (russian) and others. You can download arabic fonts if you wish to write a letter to tell Osama Bin Laden that you know where he is and you are coming to collect the $25 million.

You can amaze and astound your "psychogeometrictrigonomicquatumphysics"

professor (not a real profession) with neat calculations done on your computer. The ability to show off just how much of a glittering jewel of collasal ignorance you are is endless with the character map lol. So look around and have fun, make strange looking faces with it Ò¿Õ¬ if thats what you want.

Later I will teach ya'll about ASCII CODE and how to type letters using numbers on the number pad.

    Have a good day,

    Greg
