James, just in case it was the first sign of a hardware failure, now is a good time to copy all the files you don't want to risk losing onto DVDs or an external drive (or both, if you're a pessimist like me).
I would say regular back up of your computer is vital. I use my lap top for work as well as personal use and a loss of data would have serious implications for my business and pleasure.
SWMBO is also self employed and a few years ago her computer's hard drive failed. She hadn't backed up for several weeks and needed some of the lost data. It cost a LOT more to recover that data from the drive than buying a back up drive and scheduling regular automatic updates.
It doesn't matter whether your computer is for business or personal use, there will be 'stuff' on there which you either don't want to lose, or can't afford to lose....Back it up, it's worth it.
Is it a shop bought computer or a built up one? Reason I ask is that shop bought PC's usually have very low output and low quality power supply's. Replacing it with a half decent or better quality one might be a good idea, especially if you have upgraded your computer in any way (even more ram requires more power).
