What grabs you on a build

Hi all I was wondering what grabs you on a build, by that I mean what makes you stick with a build ( obviously the title has an initial grab factor) yes if its a topic you are interested in intially you will watch it but then you may loose interest quickly, but what keeps you watching a build is it the skill, artistry, subject or the way the build is posted ie humorous, technically accurate maybe historical info. My builds tend to be here is a an update oh here is another oh and an other which I realise is so boring and to make it worse I tend to write it on one site then paste and copy to the rest (we all do it) I want to improve in my posting, so what's lacking. I realise I can't be an expert in all the genres I build in (I like so many) but I've noticed you don't have to be an expert to get loads of views and comments so it can't be solely down to knowledge or skill. So what is it that gets people following a build. Subject matter, skill, knowledge or some indefinable amorphous thing.

For me it depends on the model kit, i'm interested in how other people have put it together, what techniques they've used, what paints or products have made something stand out, like a new cannopy mask or a different brand of clear varnish etc. I've only been model making for just under 2 years so I just like seeing all the different kits whether it's a car, plane, or tank or diorama. I admire the dedication everyone puts into their creations. For me I know that many people will have whatever kit I have on my bench but, it's my work and my build and everyone has slight differences in the finish they achieve. It's like the Riflemans Creed ' This is my model kit. There are many like it, but this one is mine. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me my model kit is useless. Without my model kit, I am useless'

          Hi Ken

For me its similar to some of the above. If its a kit i have or am interested in getting then i tend to follow along to get a view of what the parts look like. See if there are any major issues the builder has found. Also like to try and pick up hints and tips that many of the modellers are kind to share with other builders.

Rather like this forum because from the short time i have been a member it all seems very decent with lots of respect being shown to other fellow modellers. Some light hearted banter from members that have obviously been on here quite a while and have got to know each other very well. And thete is a great variety of builds taking place right across the price spectrum of kits on the market.

What has put me off some forums (and i hasten to add not this one) and therefore the interest to "follow along" are those very few modellers who think they are light years above anyone else and feel they need to "teach" others in what i have sometimes thought to be a rather patronising way. I guess in every walk of life you come across such people but for me they tend to be the ones i do not follow. And some of that goes back to my very early modelling days when i joined a local model club. There was a chap that belonged to this group who used to do quite a number builds for some of the well known model magazines and there was no denying his expertise but there was nothing more off putting to take along your latest creation only to have it pulled apart because "the engine deck on that esci t-55 is not the correct size", the number of bolts on that Sherman are not correct. In a judging arena this would have merit

What i have liked about this site is that people are very helpful on here and very supportive. And always liked your posting style Ken.

Always been interested to see what you are building and do my best to comment.

What i struggle with though is a total lack of time to sit and do very much as my job seems to consume just about all of my time. I have a day off tomorrow but this weekend its bedroom tidying (and trust me that really does need to be done) and then its on the garden to clear out all of the summer bedding, hanging baskets, rose bush trimming and the like ready for the winter.

For me i cannot really tell you how to alter your style because to be honest i find it just fine as it is. Long may it continue.
