How would you describe a Vignette?

I was looking for a forum section for vignettes for my 'Bottle top' model - there isn't one - but I think it would be a useful addition to have one.

We all know what one looks like, but where do we draw the line between a vignette and a diorama?

So, describe what you think constitutes a vignette. No cheating, and looking at definitions on 'tinternet.

Your own words please and preferably just a couple of lines, with no pictures.

If there is a general agreement, then I will ask admin. if we can have a vignette section. If there is no agreement, and to avoid possible 'complications' in the future, I won't pursue it further.

A vignette to me is a diorama base but just big enough to fit the model, and is more of a snapshot than telling a complete story.
It also consists of just one model/kit, not several.
It's the "postcard" of dioramas in other terms

I think that we have had this question before and the replies where very interesting... To say the least.
My view on the matter is this. A vignette is a small diorama without to much to distract the eye, though just enough to make an image. Think of a triangle standing on its flat base. Divide that into three slices from the base up. With me so far? Good man. The large bottom section is your basic diorama. Loads of room for loads of ground work, buildings, trees and other props. Oh and the model of course. The next slice up is your vignette. Small base, room for a single piece of armour or aircraft, and a figur or two.
Then right at the top of the pyramid is the little pointy bit. This would be the simple base or single figure.
After writing all that..... For the sanity of the forum members, and the mods, I would like to suggest that a vignette is a diorama, just not as complex. If it's 'just a model on a simple base' then it's just that and should go in the relevant section....

A diorama, to me, tells the whole story. It shows the terrain, gives an idea of the location and is a view that we would see in the middle distance with our naked eye. A vignette is a detail, a section of a scene that we would see with our naked eye if close up and personal. Or, to put it another way, a diorama is a chapter from a book, a vignette is a a paragraph. In figure painting, a single figure on a plain base is a figure, a single figure on a base with scenic materials is a vignette. If a vehicle is involved then the vignette base should be only marginally bigger than the vehicle footprint.

I personally think that a vignette section is worth having as it may encourage people to have a go at a small scene who would not feel confident doing a full diorama.

Thanks for the replies boys. It seems to me we all are in agreement as to what a vignette is.

As such I don't really see the need for 'Rules'. Just a separate 'Vignette' posting forum.

I'll put in a request to admin. for it's inclusion.

I don't mind vignettes and dioramas sharing the same space simply because they are the same thing, just a wee bit different in size and composition - and the fact that most kits here are built stand-alone.
I've built a couple now (vignettes) for practise so I will shortly show some of mine, but I see them as a complement to the kit, like something to park them on, and to give an insight to what I thought building the kit.
This is obviously all practise for my massive Schwerer Gustav diorama later this year
