A good place to visit, Cosford. Especially for the aircraft people on the Forum. Though, it was not a good turn out on the day from the forum, I did meet 3 Scale model members, James, Alan & Tim plus Tims daughter.
At the start, Me, the wife and friends arrived at the meeting point about 15mins late. So we didn't have any way of knowing who was who, every person you looked at, you thought, that they could be from the forum? and there was a lot of people there, it was quite surreal. But james and Alan spotted me, with Tim and daughter finding us later in the cafe.
The most important thing is that, Nigel.d, has started and planted the seed, which should not be left to fade away, his effort should be backed up and pushed forward.
The main thing missing at the weekend was a focal point? to meet was ok. But after meeting, you have no place to chew the fat, and find the people of like mind or model type?
why not copy a formula that already works. somthing on the lines of The IPMS Model shows? Let the scale model forum have its own show. The different modelling sections Competing against each other ? (a bit of healthy rilvalry) you would then have no trouble finding the people who make the same type of models you make? with plenty of time to chew the fat.
You could have each section having a tabled display. For example:
Planes, RC Cars, Boats, static and RC, Tanks, old, modern, trucks, sub, trains, OO, and the others, gliders and the list goes on. Or just 4-5 groupings. The winners of the show would then have bragging rights for the year, or till the next Scale Model Forum Show.
plus helping each other with build problems, or techniques face to face, some might find easier. Plus you could actually point to a model and ask a question about it, actually see what you are trying to achieve or get help getting there.
After doing somthing like that, arranging and meeting people at duxford, cosford or any show would be alot easier as you would of already met.
I do think with a possible year between Cosford and the next meet, what ever is chosen, there is time for people to get things sorted and make it something to be proud of.
Mike.
