Ace of Cakes - cakemaking or scale modelling????!!!!!

Ok guys, I know this might seem a bit out there, but I'm sitting watching ace of cakes on sky channel 262, the stuff they make is amazing, planes, trains, cars boats, the whole of hogwarts and much much more. My point is (bear with me, I'm getting there!!!!) is this scale modelling? Should this form even have its own section on the forums??!!! I know this is slightly tongue in cheek, but makes I thinks an interesting discussion point!!!!

    Cheers, Andrew

It's Scratch Building in the extreme really eh.

If it becomes a forum section, i'm out ... i trained as a chef in the 80's yet have never managed to get a cake to look like a cake ... they just turn out as big biscuits.

I don't see why not, it's creating a recognisable object from materials which weren't used in the original construction and design of the object being modelled. (did hurricanes have marzipan gun sights? Hmmm) just like making a model from coke cans or scrap metal, or old nuts and bolts. What it's not, like the above is a purpose made moulded scale model kit.

          Hi lads,

Iam was a chef for 16 years and I now make cakes, so I would say that its abit of scale modelling or scratch building with the use of foam for things that icing and cake would not do, because of the weight. but alot of my modelling skills are used on cakes like airbrushing and a steady hand for piping work, like you need to when painting fine lines with a brush.

          cheers jim

How do you weather them once they're done; and do you use edible ricepaper for the decals?

              Hi Gern,

we use edible airbrush paints for most of our cakes so weathering is easy. you can also buy edible powders that you brush on. As for decals you could use rice papper but we dont, we just use a piping bag and free hand it. most of our cakes turn out to be things like giant bugers or cartoon characters for kids partys or the odd wedding.

              cheers

I watch the other cake making program, Cake Boss, they really do make some great looking cakes...

My question is, how long do they last, surly the cream etc must only have a very short life before going off...

                  Hi Andy

the cream is a butter cream so it will last quite along time as long as theres no breaks or cuts into the icing. The icing preserves it for a while and it will last even longer if you use jam instead of butter cream as a filling

Hi Ian, one of the guys in the show makes as much as he can from edible stuff, his name is geof, and some of the stuff he does is amazing, especially the cars and jeeps and planes he's made!!!! I do agree a lot isn't what I'd call cake cos it is foam wood ect just covered.

                      Cheers, Andrew

Dont take it the wrong way, the things that they can make are truly amazing and very worth looking at. An art yes, model making......not in my eye.
