    Filler/Glue

    Hi,

Sorry if its in the wrong category, wasnt sure where best to post.

I have 2 issues with some of my modelling and they are the glue and filler i use.

I got some Revell glue with my first kits and its all i have used so far. I am looking for something that its a little more manageable, maybe something thinner so that i dont put so much on. It does tend to come out rather glupey sometimes, not good for the finer parts i need to stick.

I also have some white filler, its in a tube pre-made but dries too fast so i generally cant apply it before it goes all unmanageable. I am thinking that perhaps some liquid filler might be better, maybe something that takes longer to go off.

Any suggestions? What do you use?

    Cheers

I've been using Humbrol liquid poly cement that you apply with a paint brush (there is a brush in the bottle but I binned that immediately because it looked too big). Unless anyone can correct me I presume it's as good as any liquid cement and will get into all the nooks and crannies by capillary action.

I have to say though that I seem to be using less and less actual poly cement and more superglue the more I get into this hobby as I paint more and more bits before assembly. Maybe it's because I'm currently doing an F1 car with more fiddly bits and pieces but it does seem to be going that way for me generally. I wonder if I am missing a trick somewhere??

I have started using Mr Cement S - very thin, great for capillary action. In addition for the precise positioning of small parts a slightly thicker cement is necessary for that I use the Revell Contacta with the long metal tube applicator. Mr Cement S mostly, but I have also bought some Plastic Weld from John to try as it seems similar to Mr Cement S.

For filler the Mr Surfacer is very good as well and available in various grades. I also use Vallejo (available from John) and that is very good as well.

Mr Cement S and Mr Surfacer available here MDC Products on ModelDesignConstruction - Browse our full range of products

Like Rob I use Humbrol liquid poly likewise cut the brush off and use a 00 cut down brush also use loctite easybrush superglue , zap-a-gap ca superglue and acrylic Gator glue and for clear parts use Humbrol clearfix which is quite thick but if used with a cocktail stick works fine ,

for filler I use Vallejo plastic putty (ok for fine gaps) , Squadron putty and Milliput two part epoxy putty both very good for any larger areas that need filling , also handy to have in the tool box believe it or not is a bottle of Tipex ideal for fine gaps and sands very easily ,

          Chris have a lookin John's Shop /www.scalemodelshop.co.uk/plastic-weld-polystyrene-cement-glue-plastic-weld-ppc-2.html

This is a very thin glue.

On the latest model I took a good look at glues & fillers & this has made a lot of difference. No applying glue then trying quickly to get the pieces into position & getting glue fingers on the plastic surface.

Plastiweld is thin. Strap your parts together in position & then run this water like glue over the surface & it is sucked into the joint. John also stocks applicators to make it easier.

Also got some Mr Surfacer fillers which are brush on & fill fine cracks & joints. They dry quickly & sand well. They come in 3 consistency. Would think that 500 consistency is the most useful. They have to be obtained through Hong Kong by Ebay.

            Thanks for that.

At the model club i went to last night, someone there gave me some liquid Tamiya to use to i have that to see how i go.

I will look into the filler.

            Cheers all.
