    Back from extended leave....

    Heydley ho folks

    First time post...

As it says I'm "backonthecase"! i.e. I've been away from the hobby for aaaaaaages and am desperate to get back into it as soon as I've found somewhere to airbrush.... After having gulped at the number of unfinished models i have lying around and unstarted ones I'm drooling over.....in terms of interests, I mainly obsess about armour and aircraft. I've attempted a 1:700 scale frigate and was less than fussed by the whole experience. I subsequently sold another on eBay. Anyway I digress......My main issues are weathering - don't know how to, apart from dry brushing some brown paint to act like mud and other lame attempts like that - Although having read articles on here and other modeling sites I'm rapidly gaining at least a theoretical knowledge on the subject. If anyone wants a list of websites that have been helping me, please let me know. Anyway I'm off to browse your site. Hope to speak to you guys and guyesses soon.

Please don't hesitate to ask questions if you need any holes filling in and, most of all, enjoy your time here.

Thanks for the welcome guys, lookin forward to sharing/building knowledge. While I'm here - I've got an Esci Mirage III waiting on a baremetal finished and I've heard so much good stuff about Alclad so went and bought the chrome. The guy at the shop says it's a necessity to put their gloss black undercoat on as a primer, I did however decline his most kind offer and said i had some in the house....I find it strange that the primer is gloss, so does anyone know if this is true or not???? I usually just prime with a mid-grey to highlight any areas that need filling and also to provide a surface for the top colour to "key" into...is this enough or am I missing something? Is it perhaps something to do with the high metallic makeup of the Alclad??

The gloss is needed on the model to stop the Alclad sinking into the primer, matt finishes tend to be coarser and more porous, think of it as a mirror, the rear of a mirror is finished in gloss black or red oxide.

The Mirage should look really good in that finish, dont forget to post some pictures when you ca,we would love to see her.

Thanks barry, I had an idea it was something to do with the matt finish....will get some pics up asap, maybe try a "before and after" type thing. I would highly recommend this kit by the way, considering Esci are not really of the legendary status like Tamiya or Academy it went together excellent, except for a shade of filler here and there and is nicely detailed in my opinion. Will let you know how I get on with it.....still pondering what I can shove to one side to get my spray booth back up....!
