As I said earlier I have never posted on or even looked at the Tag Quiz thread - until just now.
Just a couple of observations based on quickly scanning back over the last month of posts there.
The thread has a huge number of posts but relatively few posters. Over the last month only about 15 different people have posted and the vast majority of posts were by a hard core of about half a dozen or so.
The majority of people who posted on the Tag Quiz thread are also regular posters on other threads.
    Food for thought?
    Jim

Forgot how entertaining and informative the quiz thread was as i hadn't looked in for a while...thanks Ian.....have heard of many reasons for closing something down but because it gets lots of hits and is popular entertaining and totally harmless?????....as to putting it to a public vote.....i come from a small part of the UK were narrow mindedness and democracy go hand in hand with the result that we havent had a sitting government for ages so i am all in favour of a good dictatorship when possible...so John..its your site...if u want to close it go ahead...you will upset a few people....if u want to keep it open go ahead...you will upset a few people......me???i will hopefully carry on building models very slowly as usual....cheers Marty

Obviously, but Ian did put it up for discussion (rightly so, IMHO) before a decision is made.

I'm not bothered if I possibly become disliked, that has happened already, but after a short spell on the sidelines and for all our sakes, I have to intervene.

Can I remind the writer of the above that John, the owner of S.M. will be reading this post and all that has gone before on this thread.
Members were in the main, airing their views calmly and reasoned, which is correct and how it should be done. There is no need to resort to such words as "need to grow up" "Pathetic" "and need to get a grip"

It also saddens me that there are members who 'Like' the use of such language.

Rest assured John will reach his own conclusion without needing help from anyone and reading the above post might not help the 'Keep the Thread' cause. So can we please be civilized in any future post on this thread?

              Back on the bench.
              Ron

Not the language Ron, but the sentiment.

My God, this has got completely out of hand.
A mention of having a vote and the ensuing row has made us sound like a bunch of children in the playground. I now have good friends saying they are thinking of going !
Yes I know I joined in , in what I hope was a civilised manor. Now it appears to have generated into a slanging match.
Come on guys, were here to build models, discusses techniques , help each other in our online club, not to squabble like children.
I'm nearly 71, and want this forum to continue.
                        John .

It seems to be a bit of a mute point now. The last post on the Tag picture thread was last evening, with a who is it question. No one else has posted for over a day.

Whichever angle you look at this from it puts the members and the forum in a poor light. Someone watching from outside could say this had come about due to jealousy from those that felt they were not getting due recognition for their build threads. There maybe some truth to it. Forums/clubs can be funny like that.

I enjoyed dipping into the thread periodically to see what was new. I found the breadth of knowledge outstanding. It even showed parts of history that I had no knowledge of. It showed that we are not just modellers but historians or geeks if you are into sci-fi. As stated above it is Admins call to make, as to what happens to the thread now. I suggest someone answers the last question and the thread is locked.

Going forward. Could it be possible to set a time limit for posting on threads. Say 3 months. Build threads that run longer than 3 months can start a Part 2 thread and so on. Until the build is complete.

That's probably because of this thread no doubt.

From my point - I only come here to look at :-

                            1) Latest Activity, to see if there is anything worth looking at!
                            2) Spots on Tinternet, Dave does a brilliant job.
                            3) Anything that ~I may find interesting in the build blogs, and
                            4) Tag Piccie Thread. I have contributed and surprised myself winning a couple, but
I do (like a few people) find it informative.

To me if something doesn't look interesting or is not something that appeals to me then I don't bother.
After all like so many have said in this thread - if you don't like the headline - buy another paper. :smiling2::smiling2::smiling2:

Well this went well didn't it children. lol
I have once more ran through the thread in question along with this one.
Si Benson?! I have removed the snide comments in your profile and also deactivated your account. As you requested. Profile details are NOT a place to make such comments and any such will be removed PDQ. :astonished:
Bilbo, along with anyone else that is interested; John is the boss but he has charged me with the day to day Administration of the forum. There have been occasions where I have tried to be flexible, tolerant or just turned a blind eye, where John has stepped in an closed a thread no discussion, no explanation. As Is his right.
John takes care mostly of back stage, I get to hop and dance stage center, if you like.
James1997. No but keep it up and you might find out. Here is a good tip for all and any; Do not go out of your way to abuse the staff. it wont end well.
Wizzzbang. A fairly good idea with a time limit on threads , but I have not been able to see a way to do it. Yet. Maybe John knows a way. However, with some of the builders on here it could end up with some builds having 10 threads.... :smirk:

I have seen that the actual number of members that regularly post in the Quiz are but a handful most of which are the "Spring refugees" with a couple of the "old boys" So it is not as if everyone on the forum is joining in.
There is quite a bit of chat and banter which pads it out a bit and the old chestnut, including photos in quotes/replies, A thing which we have tried to knock down on several occasions.
As an example in the Latest acquisitions thread. I went through that once and removed all the photos that where included in quoted replies that alone shaved 10 pages off the thread!
God knows how much server space they all take. (A server that John pays for out of his own pocket).
In the short time this thread has ran, I can see that it is a very mixed bag of emotions. Most defending the thread, but the votes say close it. How confusing is that?
I know that this post is getting long, but I have a whole pot of coffee. However, as someone once wrote "The end is neigh".

I think that the Issue some members have is not that the thread is so big with a gazillion views, I think they are concerned that the rest of the forum is getting over looked.
I am now going to go and have a good think on this to find a solution that is amicable to all (well as many as possible).

I agree with John that this has all become a bit silly. I'm not going to comment on the TAG question - I've had my vote and that's that. What worries me is that there still seems to be a 'them and us' thing going on - the ''Spring Refugees' versus the 'Old Boys'. I find this very disappointing and a bit sad, and wonder if it it isn't the true root of complaints about the TAG thread.

I can understand how overwhelming the sudden influx of new members must have been, and I can even understand why some would feel resentment, but isn't it time we 'new' members were accepted? I think that the majority of refugees have tried their hardest to fit in and are generally contributing in a positive way to the site.

I also think we should take heed of what has been said about John and the site. This is all privately funded and only here by the grace of that good man, and I for one am very grateful to him. The reason that the other site folded was because it was sponsored by a magazine that saw declining sales and was not supported by the majority of the forum membership - people just could not be made to see that they were mutually dependent. Don't take this one for granted.

Now, shall we all get back to some modelling?
