Sorry about the Them and us "handle/tag" but it was purely a way of saying newer and older members. I for one am an advocate of the WE and not THEM and US.

If what jameshoughton1997!!!! said counts as abuse on this forum, you really don’t want to go out onto the rest of the Internet …

No, just like not everyone’s joining in the Spots On The Internet thread, or the ships subforum, or any other thread you care to name … It would be nice if more people took part instead of the small group of regular posters, but for I suppose any number of reasons, they don’t.

Impossible, unless the forum calculates the length of each post in pixels (very unlikely) and then has each page contain a number of posts until it reaches a particular number of pixels in height. This would be ridiculously impractical to implement, so instead, forums tend to simply have a fixed number of posts per page (or do infinite scrolling, but your forum software doesn’t). Since it simply paginates every 20 posts, removing or adding anything to a given post doesn’t change the number of pages in the thread — a thread of 100 messages will be 5 pages long, regardless of whether each post has a single line in it, or a hundred lines and a hundred images.

A quoted image doesn’t take up additional server space beyond what’s needed for the original instance of it. (Well, technically it does, in the memory needed to include its URL to the quoted message, but then we’re talking of a couple dozen to maybe two hundred bytes per image, which is so small it isn’t even peanuts.) It should also hardly take any more bandwidth, since a smart browser will notice it’s already loaded that image and simply take it from its cache rather than download it again.

It’s quicker and easier to click a poll than write a reply, and those who actively want it closed have little to gain by saying why, while those who actively want to keep it open do very much.

I'd forgotten (well, almost) that there were two groups of members, but the 'new guys' have been here several months now, so can we please forget any idea of two tribes? In any case, I don't think it's relevant to this discussion, there are a good few of the 'old guard' posting in the thread under discussion.

Not confusing at all Ian, given that three of the options are to keep the thread, two of those with some changes. Only 40% of those who voted wanted to close the thread, 60% to keep it in some form.

As has been said this has got out of hand. The tone and language of some posts has been unacceptable. It is never OK to be rude, offensive or aggressive. We may all have differing, strongly held views but need to put them forward politely and with respect.
Thank you Ian for apologising for the "Spring refugees" tag. Wherever we are from or whenever we joined we are part of this forum family.

I have not yet voted mainly because none of the 4 options reflect my thoughts. The first option to close the thread seems rather unkind. Why stop a small group of people from having fun? I have no interest in the thread but that is no reason for me to vote to close it. Those people are actually active members of the forum - they don't restrict their postings to the quiz thread. I truly doubt if closing that thread will result in more post on other threads.
The second option is my real problem. I would vote to keep the quiz thread open BUT that choice is tied in with voting to disregard the law of copyright. If the thread does break copyright law and the forum, or in particular John, could 'get into trouble' then I would say shut the thread down immediately. I would not feel comfortable voting in a way which supports disregard for the law. The issue of whether the thread is actually breaking copyright has not been clarified. The last two options don't have any merit for me although others may feel they offer a way forward.

I sincerely hope we can all calm down and as Peter says "get back to some modelling". Far too much damage has been done already.

OK there is a new section in the forum The Amusement Park. Herein you will find all the Quiz/caption/joke forums.
Note that they will not appear on the new posts / recent posts page. If You wish to be kept upto date, you simply need to click on the watch thread option. Then you will get an alert to tell you there is a new post.
Can we ALL live with this solution. The Quiz stays, those that are not interested dont see it those that are do.
What is that old saying... out of sight out of mind.

                Ian .
Thank goodness, in full agreement. I woke up this morning feeling quite disturbed by all this, and don't mind saying so. Felt quite a blow to the Mo Jo especially as Si Benson has left because of it.
Hope every one is, as Bob has said, is happy.
Oh well I'll just carry on as before.

Ian, just a thought. When logged out the Captions & Quiz forum is still visible, although the Jokes forum isn't. As part of the issue relates to copyright of pictures, should the Captions & Quiz also not be available to anyone not logged in?

                      Hi Ian
A good, reasonable solution which I hope can be accepted by all and can put an end to all the bad feelings.
As John said it is a real shame we have lost members in the process.

So now I will close this thread for further comment, but leave it a while before I remove it. (its not the kind of thread we want possible members falling across while smooching around). So people can catch up and then we can all move on...
